Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone — the utterance of these two names is enough to make you instantly forget about everything else and just think of one word: fabulous. Over the years, the two hilarious characters from fan favorite BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous have been determined to have a great time at all costs. And naturally, they've always remained absolutely fabulous.
Of course, Monsoon and Stone wouldn't exist without the help of leading ladies Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. The real life duo behind the hilarious characters have been so fabulous over the years that they could give their characters a run for their money. With the famed pair returning in this year's Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, let's take a look at some of the many times that Saunders and Lumley were just too fabulous in real life.
When They Appeared On David Letterman In 1995
Throwing it back to 1995, Saunders appeared on Late Show With David Letterman for what appeared to be a solo interview. She started dropping some hilarious lines about how great it was to finally be on her own when Joanna Lumley crashed the interview and fabulously stole the attention from her co-star. What ensued was a hilarious battle of attention-seeking between the two stars. Ironically, Saunders also claimed that they had wrapped up Ab Fab once and for all. Now, here we are with two follow-up series and multiple specials alongside the long-awaited feature film set for release.
Not only is this interview incredibly fabulous because it highlights just how popular Absolutely Fabulous was in the U.S., it also highlights the comedic chemistry between Lumley and Saunders in real life. It's a witty, over-the-top interview from two great friends. We'd love to watch more just like this one!
When They Appeared On The News In Character
In order to promote both the 2012 Olympics and their 2012 Absolutely Fabulous Olympics Special, Saunders and Lumley appeared on Channel 4's news in character as Edina and Patsy. There was no audience laughing and no sets — just a very real interview with the characters. In a positively perfect moment, the two just proved how effortless it is for them to return to the characters we know and love. And the champagne debacle they end up discussing on-camera is just hilarious.
Seeing these two icons appear on the news highlighted how much of a pop-culture phenomenon Absolutely Fabulous had become. But more than that, it highlighted the hilarity of both actresses. They may have been improvising and channeling Edina and Patsy, but what we really saw was the genius of Saunders and Lumley.
Edina And Patsy At British Fashion Awards 2015
At the 2015 British Fashion Awards, Stella McCartney won the Brand Of The Year Award and needed somebody extra fabulous to present the award. So, who better than PR legend Edina Monsoon and art director Patsy Stone?
Dressed as their Absolutely Fabulous characters, Saunders and Lumley made their way to the stage and delivered a few hilarious lines before announcing the winner. Lumley delivered a perfectly timed quip, reciting one of her most memorable Series 1 quotes when she stated, "You can never have enough hats, gloves and shoes. Cheers, thanks a lot." They then presented the award to Stella McCartney and reveled in the excitement. Saunders and Lumley were completely in their element and stole the show.
Joanna On Kissing Leonardo DiCaprio
As many of you may know, Joanna Lumley co-starred in The Wolf Of Wall Street alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie. In the film, her character kissed Leo's character. In a recent interview with Graham Norton, Lumley tells it like it is and goes into great detail describing how much "peppermint surgery" they had. And although she may not have thought she was wearing the most fabulous clothes in the scene, she was most certainly fabulous in her reflection on it, describing Leo as "very charming."
When They Reflected On Their First Meeting
While promoting Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, the duo appeared on The Graham Norton Show and reflected on the first time they ever meet. It's a fascinating interview that really gives us an insight into how Ab Fab almost didn't come to fruition as the two performers claim they didn't have much chemistry.
The best part of this interview is how they can remember the awkward meeting so clearly, especially Lumley's desire to get out of the project after believing that Saunders hated her. The fact that they can talk so freely about how they didn't click at first just proves the fabulousness of their relationship.
When Jennifer Photobombed Kourtney
At the Glamour Awards last month, Jennifer Saunders proved to everyone that the Edina Monsoon within her is alive and well. In a moment of comic genius, Saunders ran up behind Kourtney Kardashian and pulled one of her character's trademark faces, leading to one of the funniest celebrity photobombs we've seen. It was a hilarious moment captured by photographers from just about every angle possible. This bit of harmless humor made us love Saunders even more.
The U.K. Premiere Of Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie
Celebrities were out in force for the U.K. premiere of Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. Kate Moss, Stella McCartney and many more showed up on the red carpet to celebrate the release of the beloved film. It's safe to say there was a truck load of fabulous-ness at the premiere. But we weren't surprised to see Edina and Patsy to completely steal the show.
Saunders and Lumley showed up dressed in character looking as fabulous as ever. Saunders wore a classy Stella McCartney ensemble, matching a fabulous panel skirt with a casual but stylish T-shirt which read "Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Fur Free." While Joanna Lumley also rocked some fabulous style, emulating her inner Patsy with a classy black blazer matched with gold trousers and high heels. She also wore her hair in her character's signature beehive style.
Nobody could have upstaged Edina and Patsy at the premiere of their own film and Saunders and Lumley took great care to make sure that didn't happen. And boy, did they succeed!
Let's face it, there's nobody more fabulous than the ladies of Absolutely Fabulous. Whether they're together or separate, in character or out of character, you are never short of fabulous moments when these two ladies are around. Saunders and Lumley are two legends who are just as fabulous as their Ab Fab counterparts.
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie hits U.S. theaters on July 22. Do you recall any more equally as fabulous moments from the ladies of Ab Fab? Let us know in the comments!
