Come 2015, most felt pretty safe to assume that we had witnessed the end of one of the most high-profile feuds at the center of the celebrity world. Finally, after throwing daggers at each other in the shape of words for years, it appeared that Taylor Swift and Kanye West had buried the hatchet. But oh boy, how we were mistaken!

Perusing the web right now, it's practically impossible to avoid stumbling upon a flurry of opinions regarding one of the greatest celebrity feuds in recent history. It's been seven years in the making and over the last few days the squabble has reached maddening proportions following Kim Kardashian's overtake of Snapchat regarding what Taylor has referred to as her "character assassination."

Currently, the situation is still up in the air, with shots last being fired by Taylor herself who took to her Instagram to try to clear her name:

Yet, as we wait patiently for progress on what has become the feud of the century, take a look back at how this KanTay screw-up escalated to such great heights in the first place. Here's a timeline of what's been going down ever since that infamous VMAs moment back in 2009:

1. 'Imma Let You Finish, But...'

When? September 13, 2009

When Taylor's "You Belong With Me" beat out Beyoncé's "Single Ladies" as Best Female Video at the VMAs, Kanye wasn't prepared to keep silent. As audiences around the world looked on gobsmacked as he jumped on stage, grabbed the 19-year-old's mic and smacked her down for not deserving it, our hearts went out to poor Tay who looked on like a helpless little puppy dog.

Yeezy became Public Enemy No. 1 and even the President of the United States was far from pleased, referring to Kanye as a "jackass." On top of that, Beyoncé came out in support of Swifty and even Katy Perry, with whom Tay shares another beefy history (but that's another story!), tweeted:

2. Kanye's Takes It All Back

When? September 15, 2009

As memes flooded the internet, and Kanye was slammed from all sides for triggering such chaos, he finally expressed his regret at the situation on The Jay Leno Show, saying:

"It was rude, period. I don't try to justify it, 'cause I was in the wrong. Dealing with the fact that I hurt someone or took anything away, you know, from a talented artist – or from anyone – because I only wanted to help people. My entire life, I've only wanted to do and give something that I felt was right and I immediately knew in this situation that it was wrong."

Taylor then appeared on a talk show, and gave her side of the story, following which Kanye called Tay to apologize once more.

3. A Year Goes By...

When? September 4, 2010

As the dawn of Twitter hits, Kanye takes it upon himself to address the MTV feud once more, tweeting:

"I'm sorry, Taylor. [...] We're both artists, and the media and managers are trying to get between us. She deserves the apology more than anyone. Thank you [Twitter co-founders] Biz Stone and Evan Williams for creating a platform where we can communicate directly."

As an extra token of how bad he feels, he reveals he's also written a song in tribute to her. This time though, Taylor is ahead of the game — she only gone and done the same already.

4. Tay Throws Shade In 'Innocent'

When? September 12, 2010

Before eager fans even heard what groveling creation ol' Yeezy put out, Taylor jumped in with a performance of "Innocent" at the 2010 VMAs. Although the lyrics were somewhat ambiguous, bordering the line between forgiving and condescending, it was widely seen as a revenge release with lyrics such as:

"I guess you really did it this time
Left yourself in your warpath
Oh, who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent"

That same November, Kanye smacked down on Taylor for exploiting the MTV incident for publicity and reiterated that she didn't deserve to win the award. Meow!

5. An Awkward Reconciliation At The Met Gala

When? May 3, 2011

Yet, following the Met Costume Institute Gala, the media was flooded with images of Tay and Kanye giving each other an awkward high-five. Fans were understandably confused but rejoiced momentarily as it appeared that they had buried the hatchet.

Two months later though, speaking to The New York Times, Kanye backtracked once more, saying he didn't have any regrets whatsoever regarding the VMA "Imma let you finish" incident.

6. A New Alliance Blossoms

When? February 2015

Following the 2015 Grammys, where the two rivals were seen acting like best buds, it seemed that finally all was well. In fact, there were even rumors that Kanye and Swift were likely to collaborate musically together. Speaking to Ryan Seacrest, Kanye admitted:

"She wants to get in the studio and we're definitely going to go in. I don't have an elitism about music, I don't discriminate."

Months later at the 2015 VMAs, Taylor presented Kanye with the prestigious Video Vanguard Award and their standing with one another went from strength to strength. Tay even made a heartfelt joke:

"All the other winners, I'm really happy for you, I'm going to let you finish, but Kanye West has had one of the greatest careers of all time."

And the outpour of love didn't end there. When Yeezy announced he was going to run for president in 2020, Taylor shot up her hand as his running mate. He even sent her flowers to show just how much he really cared:

7. And Then Kanye's 'Famous' Drops...

When? February 11, 2016

The world's collective jaw dropped to the ground when Kanye debuted his new track "Famous" on his latest album, The Life of Pablo, with the following line stirring up a shit-storm like no other amongst fans and A-listers alike:

"I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous."

Taylor's crew came to her aid (with girl pals from Jaime King to Gigi Hadid tweeting their support) as her team vehemently denied the fact she gave approval. Apparently, there was no way in hell Taylor would ever have been okay with the misogynistic phrase "I made that bitch famous." To this, Kanye tweeted the following and the claws were out once more:

That same February, Taylor ascended the podium at the 2016 Grammys to accept her Album of the Year award, uttering these impassioned words:

“I wanna say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undercut your success, or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people side-track you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you for this moment.”

Despite never mentioning Kanye's name, we all knew who the speech was actually about. Shots had been decidedly fired.

8. Kim Kardashian Enters The Fray

When? June 16, 2016

The feud lay relatively low for a few months, right until Kim Kardashian decided to rile it all up again in her GQ cover story last month. Speaking in defense of her husband, she reiterated that Taylor knew all about the lyrics:

"She totally approved that. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn't. I swear, my husband gets so much shit for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved."

Apparently, the entire conversation was also filmed (something we know to be totally true now!) and Taylor's attorneys even attempted to get their paws on the evidence. To make matters worse, Kanye's "Famous" music video dropped, exposing a slew of naked celebrity wax-works snoozing away in Yeezy's bed — and Taylor was one of them.

9. A Keeping Up With The Kardashians Exposé

When? July 14, 2016

The bad blood was truly back now and it looks like it's here to stay. Kim took it to the small screen in her reality TV show, hammering it to the world that Taylor was lying about not approving the track. Like Kourtney, we nodded away as we kept our ears impatiently to the ground regarding what might happen next:

And right after the premiere, a slew of Snapchats were posted, signaling that the Kardashian queen was not lying. The Earth stopped rotating, Twitter explodes with the hashtag and Taylor Swift's account was swamped with thousands upon thousands of sneaky snake emojiis.

It appears that Kim has had the final word on the situation, posting the following herself:

So here we are — seven years on, and this feud is still bubbling and brewing. I don't know about you guys, but I'm keeping my eyes peeled because this situation is definitely beyond next level celeb beef.

Are you Team Taylor or Team Kimye?
