Saban's Power Rangers Movie has treated fans to an explosion of information. We have had news on casting, items revealed including the suits and Power Coins and even a look at the toy line. With all this happening, let us look back at some of the front men of every Power Rangers series, the Red Ranger. The Red Ranger is the apex of any Power Ranger team. Typically the leader and will be braver, stronger and sometimes a little more stubborn than the other Rangers. The Red Ranger has always seen higher merchandise lines produced, and is the must-have Ranger toy for fans. The Red Ranger is so big that for the 15th anniversary of Power Rangers they made a special episode featuring the first 15 Red Rangers uniting in an episode of Power Ranger Wild Force, titled as Forever Red.
So far we have looked at the top five female Ranger moments and the top 10 sets of Zords. With the Red Ranger at the forefront of every Power Rangers series, let's look back at the top five Red Rangers of the past.
5. Lauren Shiba - Power Rangers: Super Samurai
Lauren is a special Red Ranger, in fact she is one of a kind (if we ignore the evil S.P.D A-Squad). She is, to date, the only female Red Ranger. Her younger brother, Jayden, posed as the Red Ranger for the majority of the series, while she completed the ultimate training in secret. The training she received was to learn the ultimate sealing symbol to lock the evil Nighlocks away. Her attempts to seal the enemy failed, and she did pass the title back to her brother before the end of the series. But regardless of her short stint, she is the only female Red Ranger and is worthy of a spot on the top five list.
4. Mack Aston - Power Ranger: Operation Overdrive
Mack was not like the other Rangers. Throughout his story you believed we had a typical young Red Ranger who was eager to prove himself, while his father seemed hellbent on protecting him. The reason for his father's protective desire was because Mack wasn't human. In fact, he was a robot. The revelation threw Mack into turmoil and he struggled with identity issues. However, upon the conclusion of the series, the Corona Aurua turned him human. This allowed him to find his place in the world as an adventurer with his father. This unique story sets him apart from past and future Red Rangers, as none had gone through an identity issue quite like Mack earning him a place on this list.
3. Andros - Power Rangers in Space
Andros was the Red Ranger that changed the universe. Andros joined forces with four of the depowered Turbo Rangers to create the new team of Space Rangers. Together they fought the evil Dark Specture and his princess of evil Astronema, along with their immense army. The pair had already succeeded in capturing Zordon and conquering the majority of the galaxy. As if things were not bad enough, Andros discovered that Astronema was his younger sister Karone, who was abducted when they were much younger. He was also the first Red Ranger to ever receive a battleizer and answered the highest request a Ranger had ever received: to kill Zordon and save the galaxy from evil. The fact he wiped out all evil in the galaxy and allowed whole planets to enjoy peace earns him place number three.
2. Tommy Oliver - Power Rangers Zeo/Power Rangers Turbo
Tommy, the Ranger of many colors, has in fact been a Red Ranger twice. He was first Zeo Ranger One Red after losing his powers as the White Ranger. With these powers, he led the Rangers against their new enemy; the evil Machine Empire that had made Earth its next target for conquest. He then became the Red Turbo Ranger, where he took the youngest Ranger in the franchise's history under his wing: the young Justin. When the time came, he found his successor to the powers and handed over the Red Turbo Powers without hesitation to TJ. Tommy would return years later, but he did take a break after his time as a Red Ranger. His sheer devotion to the Ranger duty lands him in the second spot on this list.
1. Jason Lee Scott - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
The top spot had to go to the original Red Ranger, Jason Lee Scott. Jason was powered by the powerful Tyrannosaurus Rex and led his team with sheer bravery and strength. He was the one who managed to break Rita's hold on Tommy and was an ever-ready friend to his team. When Tommy lost his powers and passed what was left to Jason, Jason never really forgave himself for letting his comrade and friend down. Lord Zedd even seized on this weakness and nearly took Jason to the brink when the other Rangers faced the same fate. However, he proved to be the ultimate Red Ranger and saved the day alone without his fellow Ranger's powers. When he was chosen as an ambassador to a teen peace conference with his fellow Rangers Zack and Trini, the trio passed their powers onto a new set of Rangers. He did even return a couple of years later to become the Zeo Gold Ranger.
The Red Ranger Legacy and what comes next?
The Red Ranger is always a focal point for all things Power Rangers. This will surely be seen in the upcoming movie, where we will see the Red Ranger as the front man for the team. What the new Jason will be like remains a mystery; he could be a karate-loving jock type like the original, or we may see a slight shift in personality? Only time will tell, so keep your eyes open for news as it is released. Next week we will look at the top five villains the Rangers have ever faced.
