Last night the internet broke with several Marvel trailers releasing via Marvel and Netflix’s social sites. With the first day of San Diego Comic-Con under wraps, we officially received new trailers for Luke Cage, Daredevil Season 3, Iron Fist and even The Defenders! While the Iron Fist teaser didn’t reveal much on the character and his story, only portraying flashbacks of his past and his return to New York, the teaser for The Defenders may have just revealed who the antagonistic mastermind is that will cause Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones and Daredevil to unite.
The Hand, Elektra And Mephisto?
The trailer starts with newspaper animation portraying the heroes’ logos. Each depiction of their logos is then ripped off the newspaper to form the word “Defend.” Behind that word is the silhouette of an open hand. This clearly represents the evil ninja organization from Daredevil, The Hand. All this is going while a specific section of “Come As You Are” by Nirvana is playing in the background. The trailer ends with the voice of Stick saying: “You think the four of you can save New York, you can’t even save yourselves.”
It looks like The Hand will bring chaos to New York when The Defenders hit Netflix next year. We will probably see who The Hand is actually worshiping, the potential Defenders’ main villain. If we take the lyrics from “Come As You Are” and interpret them as an allusion to The Defenders, we could potentially be seeing Mephisto in 2017. Let’s dig deeper.
'Come As You Are' By Nirvana | The Defenders
While the song has had many interpretations over the years, instead of deciphering its meaning, let’s directly tie the lyrics of the song to the story of Daredevil and the rest of the Defenders. Kurt Cobain sings in the trailer:
"Come as you are, as you were, as I want you to be, as a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy."
Matt Murdock/Daredevil is a devoted Catholic and many times throughout both Seasons he’s had to face his demons. In Season 2 we saw his first love, Elektra, die by the hands of Nobu in the final episode. Later, we saw how The Hand was preparing to resurrect her. Could Nirvana’s lyrics be pointing us to a Mephisto-possessed Elektra? Matt felt pain and guilt over Elektra’s death, and she has acted as both a friend and an enemy throughout their adventures together. Since we know Elektra is coming back, it makes sense that she could be the first phase of evil that the Defenders face in their miniseries. After they succeed in taking the demon out of Elektra, the demonic entity would then finish leading The Hand in taking over New York.
Additionally, this would bring Daredevil face to face with "the Devil." Even more, we could say that that hand from the trailer represents somebody coming back from the dead, like a hand reaching out of a grave from the dirt (Elektra?). So is Mephisto taking a trip to the Big Apple in 2017 and taking Elektra along with him? Check out the trailer below and let us know in the comments!
