Selena Gomez has been in the public eye since she was knee high to a grasshopper, but there are still plenty of intriguing facts to learn about the Disney channel star turned singer.

Below are some facts I've plucked from all corners of the internet so you don't have to, so lets all do our revision together and learn more about the fabulous 24-year-old star.

1. Humble Beginnings To Chart-Busting Star

Selena might be one of the biggest singers in the industry right now but she wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Gomez's mom, Mandy Cornett, was just 16 when she gave birth to the former Disney star and they were pretty hard up financially when growing up.

Selena has been pretty candid about her humble roots and she opened up to Perez Hilton about her upbringing back in 2011.

"I remember my mom would run out of gas all of the time and we’d sit there and have to go through the car and get quarters and help her get gas because she never liked to ask my grandparents for money."

The now 24-year-old star also recognized what a great job her mom did of raising her in the same interview and it's clear she really admires her.

"I remember having a lot of macaroni and cheese but my mom never made it seem like it was a big deal. She was really strong around me. Having me at 16 had to have been a big responsibility. My mom gave up everything for me, had three jobs, supported me sacrificed her life for me."

2. A Name Written In The Stars

Selena is named after the Tijuana pop sensation Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Sadly, the Mexican singer was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, the woman who formerly fan her fan club, in 1995. Selena Gomez was just under three years old at the time.

3. Spanish Struggles

Selena's father, Ricardo Joel Gomez, was of Mexican heritage but he divorced her mom when she was just five years old, so she never learned Spanish. This has clearly weighed on the star's mind and she was determined to pick up more of the language in 2010 when she told Latina Magazine:

"I practice [Spanish], but I can understand it better than I can speak it. So in a lot of my interviews that I did recently, they would speak to me in Spanish and I would answer back in English. They were like, 'You pick it up so easily,' but I don’t want to say it in Spanish because I’d be embarrassed if I mess something up. I really want to get Rosetta Stone, because I really need to learn my language."

It seems like Selena has been practicing since then and she recently did a Spanish language Pantene commercial with a pretty flawless sounding accent. You go girl!

4. Acting Inspiration

Selena says she became interesting in acting by watching her mom, who was also an aspiring actor, rehearse when she was a little girl.

Now she has plenty of experience in the industry, Gomez has named her favorite actress as Spotlight and The Notebook's Rachel McAdams.

5. An Early Bloomer

It's a well known fact that Selena started acting on Barney and Friends when she was just seven years old, but she has also made some other amazing achievements at a young age.

At just 17, Gomez became the youngest ever ambassador to UNICEF and she still represents the charity with fundraising concerts and humanitarian visits.

6. Tiny Tats

You might not have noticed, but Selena has seven, possibly eight, tiny little tattoos dotted around her body, they are:

  • A Tiny Musical Note: The tiny musical note on Gomez's wrist is a tribute to her mom and her love of music.
  • Roman Numerals: The Roman numerals on Selena Gomez's neck are also a tribute to her mom. They read 76, the year her mother was born in. Awww.
  • God Strengthens Me: Gomez has the words 'God strengthens me' from her favorite bible verse tattooed on her hip.
  • Love Yourself First: After breaking up with on again off again boyfriend, Justin Bieber, Selena got the words "love yourself first" tattooed on her lower back to remind her what really matters.

  • G: People initially thought the tiny g behind Gomez's left ear was represented her own surname, but she cleared matters up by explaining it was for her little sister, Gracie.
  • Om: Selena also has the hindu signal for 'om' tattooed on her hip. This complicated ancient symbol can represent a sound that has the power to clear the mind of earthly distractions when chanted.
  • Sunshine: The word 'Sunshine is inked on Gomez's foot in memory of her grandmother.

7. Blame Mom For Bieber!

Sure, Selena and Justin's turbulent love story has generated more column inches than the presidential election, but do you know how they first met?

Apparently, Selena's mom and Scooter Braun are the people who bought the pair together all the way back in 2009 when they were put on what sounds suspiciously like a play date. Gomez told Letterman that:

"Actually, his manager called my mom, who’s my manager."

So, there you have it!

8. Big Age Gap Big Sis

As we learned earlier, Selena's mom had her very early in life, so it should be no surprise that she found love again and started another family.

Selena's little sister Gracie is just three years old, almost 21 years younger than her big sister, but as the tattoo above shows, that hasn't stopped the siblings from developing a wonderful bond.

9. A Suite Start!

We all remember Selena for her awesome role as Alex Russo on The Wizards of Waverly Place, but she actually made her Disney debut a year earlier on The Suite Life of Zac and Cody. Not only that, Selena also had an on screen kiss with Dylan Sprouse.

10. Pageant Prep

She might have been on TV when she was a mere sapling, but Gomez had already had some training for her time in the spotlight thanks to pageants.
