If you're a horror fan, than you're definitely familiar with the famed Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Brought to life by then-struggling actress Cassandra Peterson, the character debuted 35 years ago as the hostess of a weekly horror movie show on basic cable, Elvira's Movie Macabre, but since then has become an ambassador for all things ghoulish, ghostly and spooky.
Movie Pilot went live with Peterson at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 to get an inside look at what it takes to bring Elvira to life, and we even got a sneak peek at an upcoming photo book chronicling the character's history.
Peterson didn't expect to become a star with her character Elvira. In fact, when she auditioned for the role, she was just looking for a way to pay the bills. At the time, she was an out-of-work actress who was studying at The Groundlings improv comedy theater in LA. And those comedy skills came in handy with the kitschy character, making Elvira a memorable creation. The upcoming photo book, simply titled Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, puts the character on full display and features nearly every variation of Peterson's famous costume. If you're an Elvira aficionado, or a horror fan in general, you'll definitely find something to love in the book.
