Fans of the DCEU have barely been able to contain their excitement with the new information and trailers released at San Diego Comic-Con. Among all of the action, a new trailer for the upcoming Wonder Woman film was released and we cannot contain our excitement. Wonder Woman was first featured in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but 2017's Wonder Woman will the origin of the fan-favorite heroine.
Check out the trailer:
Pretty amazing, right? Wonder Woman look set to be an incredibly exciting, action-packed movie. However, what I can't help but notice is that after so many failed attempts over the years, it appears that DC have done Wonder Woman justice. Let's take a look at what led me to this conclusion.
Faithful To The Comics
We were all a little worried that Wonder Woman's origin story would be messed up. It's pretty heavy material and requires a lot of screen time. Having only ever been done successfully once — the Lynda Carter TV series — we have all been hoping that the DCEU would provide us with another successful Wonder Woman franchise that would be faithful to the comics. One of the best scenes from the trailer is Diana finding Steve Trevor on her sacred homeland — this is how the Wonder Woman story has always began and, as Wonder Woman fans, we're delighted to see how close to the source material this movie appears to be.
Moreover, the creative decision to set this movie in an earlier decade is great because it sets Wonder Woman apart from all the other films in the franchise and, more importantly, allows Wonder Woman to have decades to hone her craft before the Justice League forms.
Diana makes it clear in the trailer that she was brought to life by Zeus, meaning that she possesses a Greek heritage. This would mean that she would be incredibly gifted as a fighter. As we know from the comics, the Amazons are extremely athletic as they train regularly.
Wonder Woman is no ordinary woman, that's made clear from the moment she dons the outfit in the trailer and her fighting abilities are proof that DC invested a lot of time to make sure that the character — and her abilities — are portrayed correctly. It's a little-known fact, but Diana's agility and strength means that she could outperform all the other superheroes in the Justice League — mainly due to the fact that she has had centuries of training. That in itself proves that this film is loyal to the comic book source material. It looks like we're set to see some pretty epic fight scenes in this movie.
The Wonder Woman Outfit
Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman outfit initially received a lot of criticism for its lack of color. DC has a reputation for darkening everything down and fans were distraught when they thought that Wonder Woman had fallen victim to the same thing. However, as we can see in the trailer, the outfit is perfectly equipped with the right colors and even her golden lasso. Gadot is glowing as she walks into battle — the whole world knows that she is Wonder Woman.
Moreover, it has since been revealed that the reason Wonder Woman's outfit was so faded in Batman V Superman is because it has discolored with age — she is immortal and has fought a lot of battles. This Wonder Woman movie is a prequel to Batman V Superman — it is her origin story so the outfit is practically brand new.
Getting Wonder Woman right was always going to be tough. Batman and Superman have had several adaptations, some were perfect and others were not, but Wonder Woman has only really had one great live-action adaptation before now so there is a lot riding on this film. As important as the correct decade and accurate origin story is, there is an even greater characteristic that any Wonder Woman adaptation would fail without, and that is her strength — without that, who is she? One thing that made the TV series so great was that Diana often discussed the concept of womanhood and female strength — one of the many reasons that Lynda Carter was such a role model for young women at the time — so it's incredibly important that DC is able to replicate the message behind the character in this new film.
Judging from the trailer, they've succeeded. Diana has an emotional strength that sets her apart from all of her male counterparts and it's not just because she's a woman — it's who she is as a person: She's compassionate but she's not afraid to stand up for herself and others when they need her help. Perhaps the moment that stands out the most is when Diana tells Steve that what she does is not up to him — in this moment, we knew that DC did not fail Wonder Woman.
Gal Gadot Continues To Shine
When Gadot was first announced as Wonder Woman a lot of fans were taken aback — they assumed that the studios would've went for a bigger industry name. After getting over this, some people remained unconvinced especially after the pictures were revealed. However, after Batman v Superman's somewhat negative reception, almost every critic agreed that Gadot and her appearance as Wonder Woman was the highlight of the movie.
If anything, this trailer is further proof that Gadot is the perfect choice. For those of you who don't know, Lynda Carter wasn't the obvious choice for Wonder Woman either, but network executives took a leap of faith with Carter and it paid off. The same situation applies to Gadot. Every time we see Gadot in action she continues to prove how wonder-ful she really is in the character.
We cannot contain our excitement for Wonder Woman and with the simultaneous release of a Justice League trailer, it looks like Wonder Woman will be gracing our screens for a very long time. Every other superhero movie had better watch out, because Wonder Woman is arguably the most anticipated superhero film ever.
