Not to dive too deep into DC and Marvel parallels, but if you look at Wonder Woman as the character who stepped in because everyone else didn't really seem to have their shit together, then Captain Marvel is her equivalent in the MCU: the one we've been waiting for to clean up the mess after Captain America: Civil War.
Just like Wonder Woman, she's also getting her solo movie, and Oscar winner Brie Larson had long been rumored as the frontrunner for the role. Seems like the rumors were just right, then, because Larson has been confirmed as the lead for the Captain Marvel movie! It's a fantastic year for the actress, who was also part of SDCC 2016 for her role in Kong: Skull Island.
While we don't know much about the plot yet, there's plenty of elements in the comics that the movie could draw from. Back in May, Marvel president Kevin Feige more or less let it slip that we would see a progression of Captain Marvel's character from Carol Danvers to her superhero mantle, so it's safe to say that she'll be a central character in the buildup to the Infinity Wars.
Granted, her own movie is only coming in 2019, but we could catch a glimpse of her in Spider-Man: Homecoming since the two of them are great friends in the comics. And what if her deep bond with Jessica Jones finally led the way to a bridge between the MCU and Marvel's Netflix shows?
All of this to say that there's a lot of reasons to look forward to Captain Marvel.
