Marvel had a huge presentation this year at San Diego Comic-Con as they showed off new footage from Spider-Man: Homecoming and Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol.2, while also announcing the main cast of Black Panther and casting Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.
Most of the things Marvel showed off like their trailers were not released (at least officially). However, the second official Doctor Strange trailer has hit the internet and it's already sending fans into a frenzy.
Check out the second official trailer for Marvel's Doctor Strange below and let's count down the five best moments:
5. The Origins of Doctor Strange
In the first portion of the trailer, we get to see Stephen Strange performing many tasks with his hands — washing them, putting a mask over his face, performing surgery and playing the piano. These were all the luxurious everyday tasks Dr. Stephen Strange was able to perform before his fatal accident, which we also get to see a glimpse of. The next shot we see is of Strange lying on a hospital bed in fragile condition with broken hands. This part of the trailer successfully sums up a the bulk of the origin in less than 30 seconds.
Stephen Strange is a very talented neurosurgeon who, ironically, was told that he had "magical" hands. This is ironic because he gets into a tragic car accident and breaks his hands before entering a world of magic. He is also known to have a big ego and act very cocky, but now his ego will have to be tucked away as he begins his journey into the secret world of mysticism to become a powerful sorcerer.
4. Learning The Secrets Of Magic And Sorcery
We get to see Stephen Strange being trained by the Ancient One as she shows him the basics of the world of mysticism. This moment blows him away as he responds, "This doesn't make any sense," to which the Ancient One responds, "Not everything does." Those two lines are easily the best lines from the trailer as it sums up magic in the perfect way — it doesn't make any sense and it doesn't have to.
At first, Stephen Strange appears resilient against the whole concept of magic as he goes on about how it doesn't make any sense. However, as the trailer progresses, we see Steven start to put his ego aside (which is going to be an important theme of the movie) and show more interest in the impossible being shown to him. Steven Strange will have to learn how to be patient when learning the ways of mysticism. He asks the Ancient One how to get from one spot to the other and she responds by telling him it's the same way he learned to become a surgeon — years of study and practice.
3. Seeing The Main Villain In All His Glory
In this new trailer, we get to see the main antagonist of the film — who is being played by Mads Mikklesen. It was revealed in the Doctor Strange prelude comic that this character is actually Kaecilius, who in the comics is a disciple for Baron Mordo and often delivers his messages. He tried to capture the Ancient One but she was rescued by Doctor Strange. Kaecilius then sent smugglers to go look for Doctor Strange.
This could potentially bleed over into the storyline of this movie, but it is hard to tell as his intentions aren't very clear at the moment. Also, Baron Mordo is not a rival of Doctor Strange in this movie, but a friend. In the sequel, we will most likely see Mordo become a villain and rival to Steven Strange. This may even happen at the end of this first movie as it could be a twist for the general audience as people will start to learn the origins of these characters after the first movie when Doctor Strange becomes more of a popular character.
2. Steven Strange Suits Up
Even though we saw the leaked pictures of Doctor Strange and Baron Mordo when we received the first trailer for Doctor Strange back in April, they only showed a glimpse of the costume at the end of the trailer. However, this new trailer didn't hold back as we got to see a fully-fleshed out Doctor Strange in action alongside Baron Mordo.
At the end of the trailer, he seems like he has definitely learned some things but he is not all that powerful yet. The Ancient One eluded to the fact that it takes a lot of time and practice to fully learn the art of magic. However, Doctor Strange will be placed into a big debacle where he will be running out of time to master sorcery.
1. This Trailer is Trippy and Totally Beautiful
If there's one thing going for Doctor Strange, it will be it's stunning visual effects. This will undoubtedly be one of the craziest-looking Marvel films to ever hit screens. The studio will surely blow away audiences as they will not believe how they keep performing their magic. It has been said about Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and even Ant-Man but Doctor Strange will definitely be the most unique Marvel film we have seen yet.
This movie also dives deep into the world of magic and alternate dimensions. Of course we have seen magic with characters such as Scarlett Witch and Thor and we have seen alternate dimensions in movies such as Ant-Man. But Doctor Strange will show how it all works and will explore further than any Marvel movie before it. This is the first time where magic will become a major force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — and I'm damn excited to see it all happen.
