You might remember when we previously talked about some rumors surrounding the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. Rumor had it that the parks division of Disney was going to remove The Twilight Zone theme from the Tower of Terror ride inside Disney's California Adventure park and replace it with a Guardians of the Galaxy themed attraction.
Well, the rumors were true.
What Exactly Will Replace Tower Of Terror?
Coming in Summer 2017, the existing Tower of Terror attraction will re-open as Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT! Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, announced at San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCC) that this attraction was on its way to the Disneyland Resort. According to the Disney Parks Blog, this new attraction will be a high-energy experience featuring characters from both Guardians of the Galaxy films.
The theme, according to Disney, is as follows:
Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (a.k.a. The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity.
Guests will experience multiple versions of the ride, similar to how Star Tours: The Adventures Continue 3D, as well as some brand new special effects — effects that might mirror some of the breathtaking tricks being used at the brand new Shanghai Disneyland park in China. There is no word just yet regarding the Tower of Terror attraction at Walt Disney World in Florida, but I would imagine that if a change like this is happening in California it's only a matter of time before Florida follows suit.
Along with Kevin Feige, it was also confirmed that director James Gunn is involved in the creation of this ride. The existing Tower of Terror ride is scheduled to close sometime in early 2017 for an extensive refurbishment to transform the existing Twilight Zone theme into a Marvel Studios production. This great news kinda makes you want to do a happy dance, doesn't it?
For me personally, I am a huge Disney Parks fanatic and I am the first to admit that Disney's California Adventure Park has been a mess pretty much since it opened. The resounding "California theme" has been strung along all this time and they still never fully stuck to it. It's time that the park forged its own identity and moves like this is how that is done. Cars Land isn't California, Frozen the Musical isn't California, and Soarin' Over the Horizon isn't California. This has been a long time coming. Not to mention this will no doubt kick start a long-rumored Marvel Land. The only thing left to wonder is whether they will overhaul Hollywood Land and/or Bug's Land for Marvel or use existing backstage space and build a brand new land from scratch. Only time will tell.
