If you were at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 this year, then I envy you. They dropped so many trailers for so many movies, there’s no doubt that fans were about to pass out due to the content that was announced and released. The Walking Dead Season 7 trailer was released, along with the first Justice League trailer, and many more, though my personal favorite was Wonder Woman.
I’ve always had a soft spot for female superheroes such as Captain Marvel, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Elodie Yung’s Elektra (Jennifer Garner did OK, but Yung takes the cake), and now, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. I believe Gal Gadot did a fantastic job in Batman v Superman, no doubt being one of the best parts/characters of the film.
I honestly didn't think we would get a trailer yet (at least not until this winter). I was surprised and blown away. This trailer had everything going for it, from the action scenes to the classic Chris Pine one-liners and just seeing one of America's iconic superheroes come to life on the big screen in such a fantastic way. I noticed some intriguing details from this trailer that make me feel that this is going to be a great film:
3. There's Going To Be A Different Tone To The Film
By now, we've all seen Batman V Superman, so you can agree that Gal Gadot did fantastic. We also know that BvS had a pretty dark, gritty tone, right? After watching the WW trailer, right away we can tell that this film won't be that gritty, which many fans were worried would be the case with the rest of the DCEU. I'm glad they put this theory to rest because it wouldn't feel right, having the entire DCEU use the same tone as BvS.
That being said, back in April, this is what Gal Gadot had to say about the movie:
In Batman v Superman, you get a glimpse of who she is but not where she comes from. In Wonder Woman, this would be the first time we ever tell the coming-of-age story of how Diana becomes Wonder Woman. It’s very interesting. It has moments of humor, but it’s pretty dark.
Take this for what it's worth, but I still don't see us having a gritty Wonder Woman film. Gadot tells us that it's going to be dark, but that doesn't mean we can't have another gritty DCEU film. Don't get me wrong, I believe the ultimate, rated R edition of BvS was a lot more fun than the theatrical cut. However I just don't see us having that same tone with WW.
2. The Action Sequences Were Fresh!
I believe this film will feature some of the most butt-kicking action sequences we’ve ever seen in any DC film. Marvel should watch out, because it seems that DC moviemakers are taking notes. Don't take my word for it, check out Wonder Woman herself taking on Doomsday from BvS!
Take that Doomsday! Watching the action sequences was absolutely incredible. My jaw just dropped when I saw Prince whip out the Lasso of Truth and kick some butt. Watching her block off mortar rounds with her shield was just excellent writing. I really hope they show more in promos and trailers.
1. The Wonder Woman Film Has A Lot On The Line
As great and epic as the trailer was, there is a lot riding on this film. It’s no wonder why Marvel Studios hasn’t done anything this risky, however, they are working on the Captain Marvel film. DC is really stepping up their game with these next few movies, especially with Suicide Squad. I also believe that film will be covering some new ground.
Wonder Woman has been a female icon for decades and making the wrong move with this movie could really damage the character, as well as the DCEU. Needless to say, I believe Gal Gadot is the perfect choice for the lead role and she has proved to us that she is an amazing actress. She pulls off Diana Prince very well and she had good chemistry will Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck during BvS.
By looking at the promos, watching the trailer, and seeing Gal Gadot in action during BvS, I believe she has what it takes. I have high hopes for the solo film and I believe this movie will be a huge milestone for future superhero films, including both DC and Marvel.
