The celebrity world is swamped with glitzy A-list parties, featuring dazzlingly beautiful people sipping on bottles upon bottles of expensive champagne. Yet, did you know that many within those exclusive circles actually choose to say "no" to alcohol?
The following stars have been very outspoken about why they don't drink alcohol, whether due to personal choice or past experiences with addiction — here's what they have to say:
1. Kristin Davis
Considering all the Sex and the City girls do is go to swanky New York bars for cheeky cosmos and chats about men, it's surprising that actress Kristin Davis actually doesn't drink. And although her on-screen alter ego Charlotte may love knocking back drinks by the pitcher with her gals, Davis has learned to fight the urge. Speaking to The Week, she has admitted:
"Every once in a while, I’ll be with friends and they’ll be drinking red wine and I’ll think, in a really innocent way, Oh wow, that’s such a wonderful glass of red wine. Wouldn’t it be fun to drink it? Maybe it would be fine, but it’s really not worth the risk.”
Kristin has revealed that she is a "recovering alcoholic," having first started drinking as a teen to combat anxiety and her insecurities. After a period of turning up to auditions hungover and failing to land roles, she checked herself into rehab and has never looked back since.
2. Blake Lively
Blake Lively is another actress that has said no to alcohol completely. Although her Gossip Girl character Serena has been known to go a bit wild with the booze, in an interview with Allure magazine, Blake has been quoted as saying:
“I don’t drink. I’ve never tried a drug. It’s just something that I genuinely don’t have a desire for.”
3. Bradley Cooper
At 29 years old, Bradley Cooper became sober. In 2012, he spoke to People about his past issues with substance abuse, saying:
"I don't drink or do drugs anymore. Being sober helps a great deal … I remember looking at my life, my apartment, my dogs [when I was still using], and I thought, 'What's happening?'"
In 2015, he further reiterated that he doesn't take his sobriety for granted — it's coming up to 12 years now since he ditched the booze completely. To this day, he is adamant that going without not only changed his life, but also salvaged his career. In an interview last December, he said:
“I would never be sitting here with you, no way, no chance [if I hadn’t gotten sober,] I wouldn’t have been able to have access to myself or other people, or even been able to take in other people, if I hadn’t changed my life. I never would have been able to have the relationships that I do. I never would have been able to take care of my father the way I did when he was sick. So many things.”
Keeping up his sobriety has had an incredibly positive effect on his way of life, while it continues to be an issue that his character in Limitless struggles with:
4. Jennifer Lopez
Have you ever wondered how on earth J.Lo still looks so insanely hot in her late 40s? Well, a part of it has got to do with her decision to forgo alcohol. In an interview with InStyle, she gave one particular reason:
"I think it ruins your skin."
There are exceptions to the rule though:
"Of course, during celebratory toasts, everybody's like, 'You can't toast with water!' So I'll toast with alcohol and just take a sip."
5. Russell Brand
British comedian and actor Russell Brand's wild reputation certainly preceded him when he first jumped into the limelight as a young 20-something. And after living a fast-paced lifestyle surrounded by women, drugs and drink, he decided to go cold-turkey.
Back in 2012, he celebrated 10 years of being sober with the following Facebook message:
"10 years clean today. Thanks for all your messages of love. Anyone can get clean, one day at a time."
Good on you, pal!
6. Joe Manganiello
Following personal struggles with alcohol in his 20s, the True Blood actor revealed on a talk show that:
“There was a period of about four years where I needed to quit drinking. And the drinking got in the way [of my career]. It was one of those obstacles that I had to get over and once again I needed to clear the road in order for these things to happen, so it really is an inside job. I had to clean up my act and figure that whole situation out.”
7. Colin Farrell
In 2013, Colin Farrell opened up about his drug addition, which he admits was completely "our of control" for years:
"I'd gotten out of control - for years I could indulge in certain things ... I had quite a high tolerance for various drugs for years, I thought. It accumulated to the point where I couldn't put my foot on the brake anymore."
Years later, speaking to Ellen Degeneres, he echoed similar sentiments:
“I was terrified [of being sober] because, I’m not saying I was a great actor before or a great actor since, but I was terrified that whatever my capacity was as an actor beforehand, however little or large — it would completely disappear.”
Thankfully, Farrell is still as talented as ever, as his recent performance in The Lobster proved:
8. Kim Kardashian
Fans of reality TV juggernaut Keeping Up with the Kardashians might already know that its prime member doesn't really like to drink alcohol.
Yep, our favorite Kimmy K has been very outspoken about the fact that, unlike her sisters, she doesn't usually touch the stuff. As well as claiming to hate the taste, she has said:
"I do not drink alcohol at all. My sisters drink, so when they get a little crazy, I am there to pull them down."
9. Matthew Perry
Back in the '90s, the Friends star suffered from a serious addiction to alcohol and the drug Vicodin. Following a period at rehab over 15 years ago, he's now sober and hasn't had a drink since. In 2013, he spoke to ABC News, revealing what it felt like to be clean:
“The thing that I’m most proud of in my life is that if a stranger came up to me and said, ‘I can’t stop drinking. I can’t stop drinking. Can you help me?’ I can say, ‘Yes, I can help you.’”
10. Eva Mendes
Talented actress and Ryan Gosling's baby mama Eva Mendes has also openly admitted to struggling with substance abuse, being torn apart by the deaths of friends from it too. During an interview with The Huffington Post in 2008, Mendes was notably offended that her host made a joke about alcohol abuse in Hollywood, calling it "Alcoholics Unanimous." The actress, who is proudly sober, bit back:
"I’m not making jokes, because people die from this stuff. So, honestly, I think it’s a bit tacky that you made a joke. I’ve got to be honest. [...] I am proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go face their demons and get better.”
11. Jada Pinkett Smith
When she was 33, Jada Pinkett Smith came to realize that she had a severe drinking problem and since, she hasn't let a single drop of alcohol pass her lips. Back in 2005, she said the following in an interview with Contact Music:
“I found myself drinking two bottles of wine on the couch and I said, ‘Jada, I think we’ve got a problem here.' I had problems with alcohol and I really had to get in contact with the pain, whatever that is, and then I had to get some other tools in how to deal with the pain. From that day on I went cold turkey; I haven’t had a drink in eight years.”
12. Robert Downey Jr.
"I think of myself as someone who has no desire, use for or conscious memory of that life. And yet I don't shut the door on it, and I don't pretend it didn't happen."
