The creators of the Mary Poppins sequel, Mary Poppins Returns, might be about to pull something extra special out of their magical bag of tricks: Meryl Streep!

According to Variety, the Oscar-winning actress is currently in talks to join the cast as Mary Poppins's eccentric cousin, Topsy. This would be another singing role for the star, who nabbed a record-breaking 19th Oscar nom for her last singing role in Into The Woods. Remember how great she was?!

While nothing is confirmed yet, this would reunite Streep with her Into The Woods co-star Emily Blunt, who's playing the iconic nanny herself. Also on board from Into The Woods is director Rob Marshall and producers Marc Platt and John DeLuca.

While we wait for this spoonful of sugar to officially go down, here's everything we know for sure about Mary Poppins Returns:

The Cast

While Julie Andrews will always have a place in our hearts (and hopefully at least a cameo in the sequel?), Emily Blunt really is practically perfect for this role in every way.

Jack The Lamplighter: Lin-Manuel Miranda

Hamilton genius Lin-Manuel Miranda might be leaving his Broadway smash hit behind him, but at least we'll all be able to get tickets to see him star alongside Emily Blunt!

The Story

Mary Poppins Comes Back, by P.L. Travers
Mary Poppins Comes Back, by P.L. Travers

A sequel to the 1964 original starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, this new movie will pick up with Mary and the Banks family, only now Jane and Michael are grown, and Michael is raising a family of his own. According to the press release, the film will be set in Depression-era London, and based on the original books by P.L. Travers. Since there are eight books in the original Mary Poppins series, the writers will have plenty of material to choose from!

The Songs

Like the original, Mary Poppins Returns will be a musical. Marc Shaiman (Hairspray, The Addams Family) is writing the tunes, and Lin-Manuel Miranda seems to think rehearsals are going well!

The Release Date

Disney certainly has their hands full with all of their live-action sequels and reboots, so it looks like we'll have to wait a while for Mary Poppins Returns. The current release date is set for Christmas Day, 2018.
