The Season 3 finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ended with a bang - literally - and it wouldn't be a season finale without the cliffhanger! The season ended with a 6-month time jump, showing Coulson and Mack chasing down Daisy while also revealing that someone new is in charge of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.
From that moment onwards, there was one burning question on fans' minds. Just who will the new director be - Tony Stark? Melinda May? Maria Hill? Or someone new?
As we are a little over a month away from the show's return, the Powers That Be over at Marvel have decided to start dropping some details about the upcoming season. Jason O’Mara has been cast as the as-yet-unnamed director of S.H.I.E.L.D. According to Jeph Loeb, the Head of Television at Marvel, this new character may shake things up for the old team:
“Bringing Jason into the mix as the New Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. forces everyone, particularly Coulson, to reevaluate their role in the Agency. Jason has both the physical presence and acting dynamics that will connect with and challenge even the most loyal agent.”
Aside from his work on The Good Wife, Terra Nova and the US remake of Life on Mars, O'Mara is also the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman in the DC Animated Universe and can soon be heard in Justice League Dark.
The only thing revealed about this new character is that his “Marvel roots go back to the 1940s.” In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have already seen a few characters from just that time period who he could have 'roots' with.
Agent Peggy Carter
We do know that Peggy eventually did get married, so it's plausible that Jacob O'Mara could be playing one of her grandchildren.
Unfortunately, Agent Carter was cancelled before we could get any indication on who this mystery husband could be, but maybe now it's something that could be revealed on a different show! Does this mean we could also see a Peggy flashback?
The Howling Commandos
We first saw the Howling Commandos in Captain America: The First Avenger, and saw slightly different teams in a flashback on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and in an episode of Agent Carter.
It's entirely possible that this new guy could be a descendant of one of the commandos. In Season Two of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D we met Antoine Triplett, whose grandfather was a Commando, so it's very likely we could see this happen again.
No news yet on which episode we will see this new director appear in, or even how many episodes he's contracted for. While he may not be a series regular I'd say he will be hanging around causing some dramas for the team and their hunt for Daisy.
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns on Tuesday September 20 on ABC.
