Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D's fourth season is quickly approaching its September 20 release date, and fans can't wait to see what lies in store for Coulson and his team! Following a shocking season finale, AoS fans were left with more questions than answers, making the wait for Season 4 especially agonizing.
We'll have to wait until the next season premieres before we can get the answers to most of our big questions, but luckily, one of those answers may have been revealed.
We already know we'll be seeing some new faces when Season 4 comes around- some of which are incredibly shocking- including a new director, seemingly taking Coulson's place as leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. This new director, portrayed by Jason O'Mara, will certainly be shaking things up next season.
While O'Mara's casting is interesting, I can't help but think that Marvel made the wrong choice for the role of the new S.H.I.E.L.D director. After all, there is someone better suited for the job who has been there since the very beginning. Someone who has earned the trust of S.H.I.E.L.D, Coulson, and even Earth's Mightiest.
Maria Hill Should Be The New Director!
Maria Hill isn't just any old S.H.I.E.L.D agent, she's perhaps one of the most important agents in the MCU! Sure, she's no Coulson or Fury, but Hill has contributed greatly to S.H.I.E.L.D, as well as the formation of the Avengers.
Portrayed by Cobie Smulders, Maria Hill first appeared in the MCU in The Avengers, with subsequent appearances in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..
For the longest time, she's just been a forgotten face in a movie full of superheroes, but now I'm putting the spotlight on her, as I attempt to convince why Maria Hill should be Phil Coulson's replacement as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D!
We've Yet To See Her Full Potential!
Despite only appearing three MCU films (and one show) so far, Hill has been appearing in Marvel comic books since 2005. As such, she's technically still a new face in the world of comics, at least when compared to the likes of Iron Man and Captain America, who have been around since the 40's. But don't let that fool you, Maria has an insane amount of experience and skill that make her an exceptional S.H.I.E.L.D agent!
With an arsenal as large as Black Widows, Hill is a force to be reckoned with in combat! It's not just combat she's good at, but intelligence as well. As a S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Maria Hill is trained in the arts of espionage and deception, and she's used her skills well. She's even been able to trick and manipulate some of our favorite heroes to comply with her, like the time she forced Wonder Man to support the pro-registration side during the Civil War storyline, threatening to reveal some seedy secrets about his non-profit organization.
Maria Hill may be cool in the films, but we've yet to see her true potential from the comics come to the screen. If she were given the role of Director in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we could see Maria Hill shine!
She's Got The Experience!
Maria Hill may not have the same level of popularity as Nick Fury or Phil Coulson, but she definitely has the same level of experience. Serving as Fury's Deputy Director, Hill was there during some of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s toughest moments.
She helped fight Loki during the beginning of The Avengers, and assisted in the Battle of New York in the Helicarrier. She survived not only the invasion of Ultron, but also the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D itself!
Not to mention Maria Hill, as Deputy Director, knows more secrets than any other S.H.I.E.L.D agent, including Agent Coulson! She was trusted with the true details of Project T.A.H.I.T.I., along with any classified information about the Avengers or their missions. Maria Hill is no ordinary agent, and she's certainly got the experience and the credentials needed to become Director!
She's Been Director A Ton Of Times!
Going back to the comics, you'll find that the idea of Maria Hill being Director isn't that far-fetched. In fact, it's happened a bunch of times before! First, some time after the big Secret War comic book event, Maria Hill was named Director during Nick Fury's absence. She was even responsible for laying the groundwork for what would become Marvel's Civil War.
Hill is once again made Director during the Secret Invasion storyline, in which current Director Tony Stark is noticeably absent for a time. Finally, Maria Hill became Director once more very recently when, you guessed it, the previous Director (Nick Fury again) was unable to fulfill his duties.
The point is, Maria Hill has what it takes to be the Director, so much so that she keeps becoming it whenever the previous Director steps down! I'm totally fine with Jason O'Mara's casting, and I'm interested to see what kind of Director he'll be, but I still wish Marvel had gone for the obvious, and greatest choice instead!
Thanks For Reading! Who do you think should be Director of S.H.I.E.L.D?
