We figure out early on in Season 3 of The Walking Dead that the Governor and the town of Woodbury are super creepy. One of their favorite past times is playing sadistic zombie games, for which they have their own arena.
The location used for the arena is the courtyard-like space of a now-abandoned warehouse.
Caldwell Tanks used to manufacture water tanks at the location and although you can see the warehouses from the street, the only way to view the courtyard/zombie pit is by parking alongside it and standing on top of your car. The wildly invasive kudzu has taken over the fence line, and has made a pretty solid wall.
However, if you go on Atlanta Movie Tours' Big Zombie Tour 2, you will have exclusive access to the interior where filming took place. It's the perfect chance to recite some of your favorite lines from the show:
Aside from the property owners, Atlanta Movie Tours have lone access to this location.
Although not remotely the only sight AMT visits on this tour, it was the highlight of my day.
There is simply so much to look at in the abandoned space, and it is so recognizable from the episodes. It's very surreal.
Below are the stairs Michonne uses to descend into the pit during the day, and above are pipes that can be seen when the Governor and Andrea first enter after dark.
The Caldwell Tanks location is in historic Newnan, Georgia, a town not far from Senoia, Georgia, where the semi-permanent set of Alexandria is established. Although there is an actual Woodbury, Georgia, Senoia is also where the fictional Woodbury location was staged.
If you have the opportunity to visit the area, Atlanta Movie Tours is the way to go for location sights and access. They even have a big, comfy, air-conditioned bus.
If you don't have the opportunity to visit the area, you can still check out the other location articles on my profile. I will continue to publish new locations, as well, so keep an eye out!
What is your favorite movie/TV site you have ever visited?
A very special thanks to Atlanta Movie Tours!
