With each new installment in the Fast and Furious franchise, there's three things we know to expect: new cars, big action and Dominic Toretto behind the steering wheel. And, given the glimpses we've been given of the new car Dom will be driving in the next film, it looks like all three of those things are a certainty for Fast 8.
After a close up photo of Dom's Dodge Ice Charger were released on the Fast & Furious Facebook page back in June, we've now had a chance to see and hear the car closer up thanks to an Instagram post from Jada Toys (the company that makes toy models of many of the Fast & Furious cars). Turn up your volume and check it out:
And if that wasn't enough for you, take another listen, and this time check out that badass turbine engine as well:
Music to my ears.
The car (perhaps obviously given the name) will be seen in the film in the scenes that take place in Iceland. The production was on location in Iceland back in June, and we briefly saw the Ice Charger in a behind-the-scenes video where it pulled an impressive wheelie:
The Fast and Furious franchise has obviously seen its fair share of cars over its seven installments, and of all the characters it's Dom who's been behind the wheel of the most. Take a look at some of the more memorable cars that Dom had driven over the course of the Fast and Furious series, and let me know if you think the Ice Charger will impress when Fast 8 is released:
1970 Dodge Charger R/T
Obviously we know the Ice Charger will be showing up in Fast 8, but the Charger has been Dom's main vehicle since the very beginning of the franchise. All up the Charger has already appeared in four Fast and Furious films, and one thing is for certain, Dom's Chargers have had hard lives!
In The Fast and the Furious his Charger was crashed into a semi-truck during a race with Brian, then in Fast & Furious one was abandoned to drive straight into explosives, and in Fast Five it was hit by a prison bus. There were two Chargers destroyed in Furious 7: a modified one was driven out of a plane and then down a cliff, and the original Charger was crashed against Deckard Shaw's car, and later driven off the roof of a parking garage.
2010 Dodge Charger SRT-8
I know it's another Charger, but the 2010 Dodge Charger SRT-8 deserves it's own acknowledgement on this list - after all who knew going into Fast Five that they were about to see a car pull a massive vault through a city, using it as a weapon along the way?!
The SRT-8 was the lucky car picked to pull the vault through the city, but unluckily Dom's SRT-8 was eventually totally destroyed after it was whipped back toward Reye's vehicle (a Volkswagen Touran) thanks to the vault, destroying both the Charger and the Touran.
1970 Plymouth Road Runner
Dom's role in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift was more of a cameo, but he still got the chance to drive one hell of a car, a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner. The car makes an appearance after Sean accepts a race challenged from a mystery person who once knew Han, only to find that the challenge is none other than Dom. Appearing in the Plymouth, Dom informs Sean that he actually won the car from Han, back when he used to ride with him. As the film ends, the two begin their race.
1993 Mazda RX-7
The first time we see Dom race in the entire franchise it's during The Fast and the Furious in the 1993 Mazda RX-7. Racing against Brian, Danny and Edwin, it looks as though Brian might take out the race thanks to his use of nitrous, but shortly before the finish line Dom reveals his own hidden nitrous system and soundly beats the lot. The RX-7 is one of the luckier cars in the Fast and Furious franchise, and appears to have survived its brush with Dom Toretto to escape total destruction!
The Lykan HyperSport supercar is one of the most expensive and rare cars in the world, and in Furious 7 Dom completely destroys it by driving it through three skyscrapers. Hey, I guess if you're writing off a $3.4 million car, you better do it in style!
Fast 8 will hit cinemas on April 14, 2017.
