Today, August 5th, marks the release date of Suicide Squad. You'll bump into a whole lot of articles about Suicide Squad today. But, don't worry! Movie Pilot won't go full DC on you. There's something for the Marvel fans as well. August 5th also marks Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn's birthday. James Gunn turns 46 today.

If you are not an avid comic book reader, chances are that you probably didn't know that within the Marvel Universe, which is dominated by Avengers, X-Men and Inhumans, there's another group of superheroes called Guardians of the Galaxy — a band of misfit superheroes from outer space led by a human, Star-Lord with a talking raccoon and and walking tree by his side among others.

Guardians of the Galaxy was a very risky project for Marvel to adapt from the comics. Marvel took a leap of faith and entrusted James Gunn with it in 2012. Two years later, the man produced an absolute gem with a stellar cast, an incredible script and an Awesome Mix Vol. 1. While James Gunn is busy with the post-production work for the sequel, Guardians of the Galay Vol. 2, you can celebrate his birthday by getting to know him better. Here are three facts you probably didn't know about Gunn:

1. His Big Break Was Scooby-Doo

James Gunn might be one of Marvel's hottest properties right now. But it hasn't always been this way. Once upon a time, he wrote screenplays for Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed. Zoinks!

Guardians of the Galaxy and Scooby Doo were two completely different phases of Gunn's life. It's not fair to compare the two movies. Scooby-Doo might have been a trainwreck, but Gunn has revealed in several interviews that he was very passionate about Scooby-Doo. On the bright side, Scooby-Doo did get a sequel a couple of years later with Gunn again on writing duties.

2. Baby Groot's Moves Were His Own

Everyone's favorite scene from Guardians of the Galaxy was the post-credit scene of the movie — the dancing baby Groot scene. Movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are known for their post-credit scenes and each one of those movies have one or two post-credit scenes. But among all of those scenes, this one was one of the very best. However, very few know that baby Groot's dancing moves were actually Gunn's moves. According to Gunn, he taped his own dance moves in an empty room, to spare himself the embarrassment and gave the video to the animators. James Gunn’s friends came up to him after a screening of the film to say that the baby Groot’s dance moves looked suspiciously familiar.

Let's see how his dance moves compare with the rest of the Marvel heroes:

3. Gunn Loves Raccoons

James Gunn is obsessed with raccoons. It is fitting that one of the major characters of most successful works is a raccoon. This might come as a surprise for few, but James Gunn actually did say it himself. Back in 2012, he took to Facebook to announce that he would be directing Guardians of the Galaxy, saying:

"I am rewriting and directing 'Guardians of the Galaxy.' As a lifelong lover of Marvel comics, space epics AND raccoons, this is the movie I’ve been waiting to make since I was nine years old. Kevin (Smith), Joss (Whedon) and all the folks at Marvel have been amazing collaborators so far, and we're committed to bringing you something majestic, beautiful and unique. I am incredibly excited."

He has been seen on the sets of Guardians of the Galaxy on a number of occasions with a raccoon. His obsession with raccoons is such, he arrived at the London premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy with a raccoon on his shoulder.

James Gunn will return with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 exactly nine months from today, on May 5th, 2017.
