Trolls can claim another hollow victory today as they forced Daisy Ridley, star of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, off Instagram. This comes only a few days after the Teen Choice awards — where following a Stop Gun Violence PSA headed by Jessica Alba and Ne-Yo — she posted an inspirational message on both Facebook and Instagram showing her personal response to gun violence.
"As I sat in the audience yesterday tears were streaming down my face at the tribute to those that have been lost to gun violence. I didn’t get a great picture of the incredible group that came onstage but they were so brave. It was a true moment of togetherness. We must #stoptheviolence.”
The message was a simple one, but powerful nonetheless, showing the world her personal vulnerability and empathy for others. It's always refreshing to know that celebrities aren't untouchables but human beings with the same emotions as us. Nevertheless, a small group of trolls responded negatively to her post, writing comments such as: "Please do not start with any liberal statements or movements... Don't ruin Star Wars for any of us" and "Just shut up, Ridley and make another Star Wars movie."
This follows Leslie Jones leaving twitter after receiving racist abuse, and The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman getting daily death threats from embittered fans. The criticism of Ridley here seems especially harsh, given that she wasn't even adopting a particularly political position, but merely asking gun violence to stop. Reasonable enough, right!
She has claimed today that she will not be gone forever, hopping back on to Instagram briefly (the account is now disabled again) to give this short statement:
With so many acting opportunities ahead of her, this could be a reasonable explanation for her absence, yet it would be a mighty shame if she were to stop snapping forever. Here are the reasons why we need her back:
Her Pictures Are Hilarious
Whether she's just kicking back with her dog, or goofing around on set, Ridley's posts never fail to bring a smile to our faces. Check out this irreverent recreation of the famous Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back scene, this time with Luke taking a ride!
She Is An Inspiration To Young Girls Everywhere
Girls need positive role-models to show them that its OK to be themselves. Ridley, among others, provides teenagers with comfort by showing them her flaws and how there is nothing wrong with being imperfect. Here is Ridley showing herself with face-cream on, as she suffers from endometriosis. By showing girls her struggles, she works to empower them.
She Cares About Her Fans
When super-fan Kevin Carlock recorded a rap video inviting Daisy Ridley to be his prom date, most of us thought he didn't stand a chance. Yet, despite not accepting his request, she took the time to handwrite him a note thanking him for the invite. How sweet!
She Loves Star Wars As Much as We Do
Who can forget this moment when Rey watched The Force Awakens trailer and burst into tears? This very visceral reaction showed that even when you are in the Star Wars films themselves, the power of the Force is still too strong!
So Rey, please don't let the Dark Side win and keep sharing yourself with the world!
Would you guys like to see her return?
