This may be a tad bit late, but I felt the need to clarify (for those who don't know) who the actors are in Spider-Man Homecoming and who they will be playing. Many actors were announced at Comic Con in San Diego fairly recently and I will only be going over these characters/actors simply because I know for sure who these characters are and who will be playing them.
Be warned: This will be fairly lengthy as I will be discussing not only the brief history of many characters, but giving a quick summary of the actors and my opinions on the casting choices.
Who is Liz Allan
Liz Allan was a high school student at Midtown High and played a small love interest to Peter Parker. She was part of the popular gang who ridiculed Peter during high school. She doesn't play a part in the comics for a number of years until she reappears and marries Harry Osborn. They have a child together, but their relationship takes a turn when Harry loses mental stability. She plays a part in Daredevil for a while. She then learns of Spider-Man's identity during Civil War and resents Peter, blaming him for all the misery her family has had (her step-brother was the Molten Man). Thanks to the "One More Day" controversial story arc, everyone except Mary Jane forgot Spider-Man's identity. Recently she worked with Norman Osborn during the Superior Spider-Man event, "Goblin Nation," and has an important position in the new company, Alchemex (a company that constantly troubles Spider-Man 2099).
In this version of the character she dates Flash Thompson at the beginning of the show, but then develops feelings towards Peter as he tutors her. She later dumps Flash entirely to date Peter. This proves to be troublesome as Peter always misses events because of his "extracurricular activities." It also proves difficult because of his feelings towards Gwen Stacy. In the episode, "Final Curtain," Peter breaks up with Liz to be with Gwen. Not wanting to ruin her reputation in from of her friends, she makes it seem as though she dumped Peter, although being truly heartbroken.
Recently Laura Harrier was cast as Liz Allan in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. Her most notable movies include The Last Five Years and 4th Man Out.
#MyThoughts: I haven't seen either of the movies she's been in, so I can't make any kind of judgement on her acting ability (which I'm sure is fine). Personally the concept of forced (FORCED) diversity in movies irks me. I understand if one wants a diverse cast of characters. I get that. But if you are already bringing iconic characters to life, why change them. (This will apply to most of the characters on this list). Of course I'm being hypocritical because I personally loved the character of Liz Allan in the Spectacular Spider-Man series despite her change of race. Maybe she'll do a good job and do the character justice, but for now I'm still iffy on this particular casting choice but not completely opposed to it.
Who is Flash Thompson
Eugene "Flash" Thompson also attended Midtown High with Peter Parker and Liz Allan. He was a star quarterback who constantly bullied Peter, but (ironically) greatly admired Spider-Man. After high school, Flash became less hostile towards Peter as he admired his intellect and his popularity with the girls (Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson). Their mutual friend, Harry Osborn, also helped to defuse the tension between the two, which led towards Flash and Peter becoming good friends. After he graduated college, he joined the United States Army and served in the Iraq War. During his service, he lost both of his legs while saving a member of his team (an act which won him a medal). Once home, he joined a special military operation in which he was bonded to the Venom Symbiote becoming Agent Venom, a superhero who was the first to control the symbiote.
Recently it was announced that Tony Revolori would be playing Flash Thompson in the upcoming Spider-Man movie. He most notable for movies such as The Perfect Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Dope, 5th Wave, and Table 19.
#MyThoughts: Tony Revolori is a fantastic actor especially in The Grand Budapest Hotel as he was nominated for Best Performance by a Young Actor in a Film. I can see him becoming one of the best actors in Hollywood, so it's fantastic that he will be starring in the upcoming Spider-Man film. However, I don't think he is fit for the role of Flash Thompson. Not that he won't act well, but that I don't think he fits the part of the football jock that harasses Peter. He seems more like a bully that competes academically with Peter (the "I got a better grade" kind of bully), which is not the character of Flash Thompson. I think that he is a phenomenal actor, but I don't agree with his character assignment at all.
Who is Michelle Gonzales
Michelle Gonzalez was the sister of Vincent Gonzalez who was the flatmate of Peter Parker before he was arrested for his involvement in the "Spider-Tracer Killer" police conspiracy. She was hired to represent her brother and was able to get a plea bargain for a lighter punishment. She took control of her brother's flat and met Peter there (Peter had been gone for months while helping the Fantastic Four in another dimension). Later Peter invited her to Aunt May's wedding to Jay Jonah Jameson Sr, where the two would have a one-night-stand causing all sorts of complications to their relationship. To make matters worse, the Chameleon took over Peter's identity and tried to "make things good" with Michelle. Once her brother was released from prison, she moved back to Chicago.
As a former Disney Chanel star, Zendaya is most known for the television show Shake It Up and various Disney Chanel movies such as Zapped, Super Buddies, Pixie Hollow Games, and Frenemies (okay I don't know if this last one is Disney).
#MyThoughts: I'm not 100% sure, but I think that this will be her first movie outside the Disney atmosphere, which worries me a little bit. Disney Chanel stars aren't known for their acting until they step outside the Disney doors. I've seen her in the show and it's the typical Disney Chanel acting (pretty terrible, but that could also be because of a terrible script/plot), but I'll take Marvel's word for it. They probably wouldn't hire an actress who couldn't act for their new movie. However, I don't understand why her character is being used for the movie. Her character doesn't appear in the comics until WELL after Peter has graduated. The only explanation that I can see is that they needed more high school characters (there weren't a whole lot in the comics to pull from). She fits the character pretty well, so the only issue I have is her acting (it has probably improved).
Who is Ned Leeds
Ned Leeds was a field reporter for the Daily Bugle who had a relationship with Betty Brant (she once had a relationship with Peter Parker). They later became engaged and married with Peter Parker being the best man. J. Jonah Jameson assigned Ned to investigate the new villain known as the Hobgoblin. After following him to his hideout, the Hobgoblin brainwashed Ned into believing that he was actually the Hobgoblin. This caused him to commit crimes as the Hobgoblin. This resulted in all kinds of problems at home, making him paranoid and violent. The actual Hobgoblin decided to let Ned go and his identity was made known and an assassin killed him. His last thought was an apology to Betty. Even though she was having an affair with Flash Thompson at the time, Betty was traumatized by the death of her husband.
Recently Jacob Batalon was cast as Ned Leeds in the upcoming Spider-Man film. He is best known for North Woods.
#MyThoughts: Again, this is a character who does not attend high school with Peter Parker. To be completely honest, he's not a very important character anyway. The only explanation I can see is that (again) they needed another high school character. The actor also doesn't fit the character of Ned Leeds in any way. He could probably more accurately portray Ganke Lee (the best friend of the other Spider-Man, Miles Morales). That would probably be a better casting choice. His lack of movies also worries me. I have never even heard of North Woods, which was a movie that came out this year.
There were other actors announced for the movie such as Donald Glover and Bokeem Woodbine. I'll be honest, I'm not sure who they will be playing. It was rumored a long time ago that Donald Glover would be playing Miles Morales, the successor to Peter Parker after he died. I would agree with that casting choice except that Miles was supposed to be younger than Peter and was introduced after Peter died.
Of course Tom Holland will be reprising his role as Peter Parker / Spider-Man for the sixteenth movie (I think) of the MCU. Personally I felt that he fits both identities well. Toby was a fantastic Peter Parker and Andrew was a fantastic Spider-Man. Holland does Peter and Spidey perfectly in my opinion. The only complaints I've heard about this actor was his age (and voice) and the fact that he wasn't Toby or Andrew--actors that some fans wanted back for the new Spider-Man movie
Robert Downey Jr. will also be appearing in the movie as Iron Man. There is no controversy over this choice as many fans love RDJ as Iron Man and can't get enough of him. His involvement in the movie suggests that the movie will be taking ideas from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic arc where Iron Man helps to train Spider-Man.
Marisasa Tomei will also be reprising the role of the young Aunt May from Captain America: Civil War. I don't know if there is a whole lot of controversy around the character being young seeing as Marvel is going for a much younger cast in hopes of future movies in the MCU. She's the youngest Aunt May we've seen so far, and I personally enjoyed her as Aunt May.
