The title of Milla Jovovich's last film in the role of Alice will evoke different feelings, depending on your past experience with the popular video game franchise.
Those who enjoyed Paul W.S. Anderson's absurdly over-the-top take on Resident Evil will be disheartened to hear that instalment number six will be the 'The Final Chapter'. Meanwhile, those who felt that each adaptation became progressively louder and more pointless will be ecstatic to hear that the series is finally coming to an end. Although, just like the zombies themselves, we can't imagine this particular franchise staying dead for long.
Now that filming has finally finished, promotion for the undeniably fun series has begun and with that comes more and more information regarding how Anderson and co. will wrap up the franchise for good. However, now that we're six movies in, it's pretty hard to keep track of what the hell's actually happening.
Does Alice still have psychic powers? Is she a clone or not? And why the hell do the zombies have tentacle mouths? The answers to all or none of these questions will be revealed as we break down everything that's been revealed about Resident Evil: The Final Chapter so far!
What Will The Story of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Be About?
When we last saw Alice in Resident Evil: Retribution, she had just been betrayed by Albert Wesker in Washington D.C., resulting in numerous deaths amongst the few remaining survivors. Now it seems that Alice will have to return to Raccoon City in order to take out the Umbrella Corporation once and for all — and save the last few remnants of humanity in the process.
The timing couldn't be worse, as Umbrella have developed new monsters that she'll have to overcome alongside the zombie hordes. Fortunately, old friends will inevitably return to the fray one last time and the official synopsis reveals that there will be a mysterious new ally who joins the fight too.
In an interview with EW, writer-director Anderson revealed that the story will also bring closure to the series:
“[It’s] almost like an origin story because we’re revealing the truth as to who Alice is. Fans can expect a full-circle return to Raccoon City and the Hive, where it all began."
The return of Dr Isaacs fits nicely with this, suggesting that Umbrella may have yet another secret facility hidden under Raccoon City that Alice will have to infiltrate and destroy by the film's end.
Who Will Appear In Resident Evil: The Final Chapter?
While it's near impossible to imagine the Resident Evil series without Milla Jovovich, it's come as a welcome surprise that Ali Larter will also return to the franchise, reprising her role as Claire Redfield one last time. Joining the veterans is Chinese actress Li Bingbing, who last appeared in Resident Evil: Retribution as Ada and Iain Glen as Dr. Alexander Isaacs.
Inevitably though, we're going to have to see some ridiculously gory deaths at the hands of zombies and lickers alike, so that's where the new faces come in. Joining the regular cast members are stars such as Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken, William Levy, Fraser James, Rola, and Lee Joon-gi, at least half of whom will probably have their intestines ripped out by the film's end.

Will Resident Evil: The Final Chapter Continue To Use 3D?
Say what you want about the Resident Evil franchise or 3D movies in general, but no one else can throw sunglasses at the audience quite like Albert Wesker! This ridiculous shot was worth the price of admission alone. Fans of cheesy (yet somehow kind of awesome) moments like this can breath a sigh of relief, as Anderson has confirmed that Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will be released in 3D too.
In an interview with Gamespot, the writer/director revealed the extent of his love for 3D, explaining that everything in the film was designed with 3D in mind:
"I kind of write action scenes and pick out locations that I think and know--because I've done so much of it--will translate very well into 3D... We build sets that I know will shoot well in 3D. It's really, even from this point, 3D is something I'm definitely thinking about...I think the one thing that most people do agree on is the 3D looks fantastic and that's really good news."
I will happily fork over whatever ridiculous price that my cinema will charge me if they just replicate that now infamous sunglasses shot in Resident Evil: Final Chapter. That's all I ask.
What Does The Future Hold For The Resident Evil Franchise?
As Resident Evil: The Final Chapter will be the final installment in the series, all bets are off. The franchise has always taken delight in taking things to absurd extremes, so don't be surprised if fan favorites such as Claire Redfield — and perhaps even Alice — snuff it in the end. However, it seems that Jovovich's character is more likely to die of old age than zombie biteage if this on set photo is anything to go by.
Saying that though, rumors of a future TV series suggests that some of our favorite characters may still survive to go on and star in a Resident Evil show. Whether this is the beginning of the end or whether the Resident Evil franchise will continue to shuffle along like one of its disposable hordes, one thing's for certain — The Last Chapter will undoubtedly be the most ridiculous Resident Evil yet.
I for one cannot wait to see Alice and co. fight the Umbrella Corporation one last time when the film hits cinemas on January 27, 2017 — but unfortunately, we still have a long wait ahead of us.
