As more and more superhero movies are released, the cameos have begun to fly in thick and fast, connecting comic book films in increasingly complicated ways. Naturally, the fact that essentially any Marvel or DC character can now appear in any Marvel or DC-related film has sent the rumor mill into perpetual overdrive.
Not a day goes by where reports of Captain America appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming or Lex Luthor popping up in Suicide Squad aren't heard, teasing fans with potentially incredible moments lifted from the comics. Unfortunately, not all of these rumors turn out to be true, but that won't stop us from speculating — especially when these possible cameos are as exciting as the latest one we've heard from Camp Marvel.
According to the site MCU Exchange, there's a strong chance that the God of Thunder will meet the Cotati in his next solo venture, Thor: Ragnarok. Before you ask yourself why you should care, bear in mind that the debut of this obscure alien race will have wide-reaching implications that could result in an intergalactic dance-off between everyone's two favorite hot guys called Chris from Marvel.
Sorry Chris Evans, but yes, if the Cotati do appear in Thor: Raganarok, there's a chance that Hulk and the God of Thunder will briefly run into the Guardians of the Galaxy. Before we all start fangirling all over the place, let's take a look at how this could happen.
Who Are The Cotati?
As one of the oldest alien species in the Marvel Universe, the Cotati have had numerous run-ins with more prominent races such as the Kree and the Skrull in the past.
Originally, the Cotati lived on the planet Hala, sharing their home harmoniously with the Kree. The peace was broken when one day, those bothersome Skrulls showed up and ruined everything by forcing the two races to compete for their advanced technology.
Despite the fact that they're basically just walking telepathic trees, the Cotati somehow managed to win the competition, but the Kree subsequently threw a tantrum and almost eradicated the entire species while kickstarting an eon-long war with the Skrulls.
How Are The Cotati Linked With The Guardians Of The Galaxy?
The doors have already been opened for an appearance by the Cotati in the MCU. Their rivals the Kree first appeared recently in Guardians of the Galaxy and have also been featured on Marvel's Agents of SH.I.E.L.D., so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to bring the Cotati into play next.
The reason that people are excited to see the Cotati in the MCU — aside from the fact that they're giant mind-reading trees, of course —is that this alien race share strong ties with Mantis, the newest member to join the Guardians of the Galaxy.
In the comics, the Cotati believed that Mantis is the perfect being, so they took her away and trained her to become the kickass warrior she is today. Now that Pom Klementieff will play Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it's likely that the Cotati will feature somehow during her introduction. How large of a role the Cotati will play is open to debate; it's unclear yet whether they will simply appear in flashbacks to her origin or whether they'll play a more prominent role in the film.

How Will The Guardians Of The Galaxy Appear In Thor: Ragnarok?
Whether the Cotati first appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 alongside Mantis or make their debut later in Thor: Ragnarok, those loveable plant creatures could potentially set the stage for a brief meeting between Star-Lord's crew and the God of Thunder.
We already know that Thor and Bruce Banner will embark on a 'road trip' of sorts during their quest, which is likely to pass through Hala, the home of both the Cotati and the Kree. After all, rumors have already suggested that elements of the Planet Hulk story line will come into play during the pair's intergalactic travels, and it makes sense for Marvel to show as many different alien races as possible. That way, we'll actually feel something when Thanos starts taking out planets left, right and center in Avengers: Infinity War.
Marvel needs to find a way to link Thor: Ragnarok directly with Avengers: Infinity War and if the Guardians of the Galaxy really will join the fight against Thanos, a brief appearance in Thor 3 would be the perfect way to bridge the gap between films. After all, Mantis may be the key to defeating the Mad Titan and the Avengers will definitely need all the help they can get if one of them is ultimately killed off.
It's not much of a stretch to imagine Thor meeting the likes of Groot and Rocket in space, especially if they're both hunting for the infinity gems — plus, a crossover between the two properties was already hinted at earlier this year. Director James Gunn recently posted a picture online from the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 which led many to believe that Thor could appear in the film, but what if it's actually the Guardians who are going to cameo in Ragnarok?
It's unlikely that the Guardians of the Galaxy have an extended role in Thor: Ragnarok and it's entirely possible that we may only see Mantis due to her direct links with the Cotati, but either way, we're beyond excited at the prospect of finally seeing the cosmic MCU meet Marvel's Earth-bound heroes.
