We first came to love Melissa McCarthy through her breakthrough role as Sookie St. James on Gilmore Girls (which is being revived on Netflix), but since then McCarthy's career has skyrocketed. Although many seem to be surprised, McCarthy is reportedly "this year's biggest dollar gainer year over year" with her earnings topping last year's by a whopping $10 million. McCarthy has undoubtedly been claiming her throne in Hollywood as the queen of comedy for the past few years, and here's why!
She's A Master Of All Comedic Genres
How can't she be the queen of comedy when she's funny is so many different ways? Her expertise stems from her numerous roles on TV, where she's mostly known for her starring role as Molly in Mike & Molly, and her many movie titles, meaning her repertoire is nothing less than impressive. She's not only a performer, but a creator as well! She's co-written The Boss and Tammy and she's working on her next project Life Of The Party that is scheduled for a 2018 release.
McCarthy doesn't just do one style of comedy, she does it all. She's the queen of character, anecdotal, blue, deadpan, juvenile, stand-up, cringe comedy and many many more. However, we must say physical comedy is her strong suit and makes her stand out in the crowd!
She's A Hilarious Physical Comedian
Melissa McCarthy owns her body and knows how to manipulate it to her advantage better than most. Her physical comedy is simply hilarious and compliments her timely one-liners for some great laughs.
McCarthy does things on screen that women are never (or rarely) seen doing and we can't help but love her for that. She vomits, she falls and gets hit, she makes a mess of herself, gets drunk and curses and she does so masterfully. She's the queen of comedy in a male-dominated profession. She can be crude like her male counterparts, showing that women aren't different. She doesn't need to be in heels to prove she's a great actress, but that doesn't mean she can't also rock a polished look.
McCarthy's physical comedy teaches women to not be ashamed of expressing themselves while owning their bodies. Comedy and female empowerment is one of the best combinations.
In Spy, Mellissa McCarthy brought out her A-game physical comedy skills, which made for some killer comic fighting scenes! Spy holds an astounding 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes! The Boss, although not one of her best movies to date, topped Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice at its US box office opening weekend.
She's Plain Hilarious And Awesome At Improvisation
She's just naturally funny; her inclination is to make us laugh. I mean look at her Lip Sync Battle with Jimmy Fallon! She doesn't need to be in a role to amaze us with her sense of humor.
She Has Lots Of Awards Celebrating Her Comedy
McCarthy received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Bridesmaids and it's not many can boast Oscar nominations for their roles in comedies. She holds an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on Mike & Molly, an American Comedy Award Best Comedy Actress for The Heat, a Comedic Genius Award, a People's Choice Award, a Favorite Comedic Movie Actress and many others. McCarthy is the queen and has lots of awards to prove (not that we needed any more proof) how amazingly funny she is!
