If you didn't notice from the hundreds of online articles over the past few days, there's something going on over at the set of Fast and Furious 8. More specifically, an online feud between the cast members. It all began when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson posted a video and farewell message on Facebook as he came close to wrapping on the film.
"This is my final week of shooting #FastAndFurious8. There’s no other franchise that gets my blood boiling more than this one. An incredible hard working crew. UNIVERSAL has been great partners as well. My female co-stars are always amazing and I love ‘em. My male co-stars however are a different story. Some conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don’t. The ones that don’t are too chicken shit to do anything about it anyway. Candy asses. When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of these scenes and my blood is legit boiling—you’re right.”
Johnson shortly edited the post with a clarification about teamwork and how everybody on set wants the same thing, to produce a great final product. Nevertheless the internet was soon flooded with theories over who he was firing at. As it turns out from other's reactions, he is talking about none other than the main man himself, Vin Diesel. Diesel himself looks set to reply to Johnson with a video discussing whatever is going on between the two of them. In addition, the cryptic fashion he delivered the news in on Instagram, as well as the smile on his face, doesn't exactly tease a brutal verbal bashing about his co-star.
The pair, while not exactly best friends in real life, have known each other a long time and worked on the previous three Fast and Furious films together. Therefore it is rather surprising to find them publicly feuding after there being no word of any trouble on set before now. In addition to this, Vin Diesel has always talked openly about his love for the cast and franchise, so it is incredibly surprising if Johnson's comments about his nature on set are true. Many fans are starting to discuss the possibility that the online battle is being used to promote the film. I thought about this idea for twelve seconds before realising that it doesn't make any sense to promote a film in such a fashion eight months before it is released. Then it came to me, what if this online war is set to turn into a physical encounter to promote the film, much closer to the release? What if Johnson and Diesel are set to turn a scripted feud into a scripted fight... on the biggest stage of all?
That's right! Wrestlemania is WWE's biggest event and the biggest wrestling event in the entire world, and next year Wrestlemania 33 is coming on April 2nd, just twelve days before the release of Fast and Furious 8. Admittedly, I'm just a wrestling fanboy hoping desperately to see The Rock return to WWE for a real match at Wrestlemania. However, this would be the perfect time, with SummerSlam almost upon us, to make this kind of announcement about Wrestlemania. It's been rumoured over the past several days that Vince McMahon (WWE Chairman and CEO) is looking to bring back wrestlers such as the Rock for matches at the next Wrestlemania, after the last event being marred by many injuries across the WWE roster. Bringing the Rock back for a feud match with another A-list celebrity would be the perfect way to boost ratings, and keep fans interested in a franchise that will be seventeen years old at this point.
This also wouldn't be the first time that celebrities have been brought into big events to bring the ratings up. Arrow star Stephen Amell was in a match at last year's SumerSlam, Ronda Rousey came with the Rock to Wrestlemania once and Mr. T had a boxing match with Roddy Piper as the main event in Wrestlemania 2! This match could be brilliant, and it makes perfect sense in a lot of ways, especially as the scene below is still regarded as the most iconic in the entire Fast and Furious franchise.
But enough about my crazy opinions, check out what some of my other creators think about this feud and these two legends!
