Kenny Baker, known for his iconic role as R2-D2 in the Star Wars saga has sadly passed away at the age of 83.
Baker's niece, Abigail Shield revealed to The Guardian that the veteran actor had been battling an illness for the last few years.
"It was expected, but it’s sad nonetheless. He had a very long and fulfilled life. He brought lots of happiness to people and we’ll be celebrating the fact that he was well loved throughout the world. We’re all very proud of what he achieved in his lifetime.”
Baker also starred in Time Bandits, Flash Gordon and Labyrinth. He was able to reprise his role of R2-D2 in The Star Wars Holiday Special and The Muppet Show.
It's never a happy day when we have to say goodbye to an icon from our collective childhoods, but we can take comfort in the fact that Kenny Baker will live on. Forever immortalized by a powerful collection of work, work that ensures his light will forever be one of the brightest that we see, when we look up into the night sky.
