Since Vikings aired its midseason finale back in April, fans have been left without much information on what to expect for the back half of the Season 4, or even when it will return. Then, at San Diego Comic Con, History Channel presented an almost three-minute trailer for the upcoming Season 4B, and there was a lot in there to mull over. Now, History gifts fans once more with brand new photos for the upcoming episodes, but still manages to leave us without a specific release date.
Let's take a brief look at some key points from the trailer and then connect the dots using the new promo shots released today to try and figure out what's coming our way when Season 4 closes. To refresh your memory, here's that cryptic trailer:
Let's take a moment and examine some of those trailer sequences a bit more carefully, shall we?
Breaking the Trailer Down
Bjorn Seeks Rollo's Help
In the first half of Season 4, Rollo was Ragnar's ultimate enemy, using his knowledge of the Viking warfare to assist the Franks in preventing Ragnar from raiding Paris. Bjorn, who had been a keen supporter of his uncle before, changed his opinion as Rollo switched sides. Now, it would appear there's more to Bjorn Ironside than hate. The trailer shows Bjorn asking Rollo for his help in getting to the Mediterranean Sea, which Rollo seems to be happy to comply with.
Rollo is also seen telling his wife there's a Viking part in him that he can no longer deny, which is probably why he'll help Bjorn and Floki in their raids further south. The one really cool tidbit in the end of the trailer is Rollo's wife, the Princess Gisla, dressed in combat attire and screaming her lungs off - which means she's definitely got more cojones than her father, the King.
Kattegat Is Attacked
The Vikings Comic Con trailer shows us Kattegat under attack and Lagertha's forces going into battle for the city. What we're not privy to is whose side she's on, and whether or not she's fighting to get Kattegat for herself, or defend it from someone else. Her dialogue with Queen Aslaug is pretty intense though, and it makes you wonder if Lagertha will eventually make good on her words to the Queen:
"I want you to know that I can never forgive you for taking away my husband and my world."
Ragnar's Boys Wage War
When the first half of Season 4 closed off, Ragnar had just come back to Kattegat after years of wandering on his own. His children - by then fully grown men - were invited by Ragnar to challenge his leadership and command and, in the trailer, it would seem someone did. Whether or not Ragnar was deposed by his sons - or one of them at least - is still unclear, but his boys do get out in the world intent on conquering it. Later, Ragnar is surrounded by spears and forced into a cage, leaving Kattegat without a king. In a rare father-son moment with Ivar, Ragnar tells his son to "seek revenge" and gives him some pretty rock solid advice:
The New Promo Photos
Today, History has released some new promo shots of some of the characters set to appear in Vikings when it returns in the fall. One of these images relates to a scene from the trailer, where Lagertha is seen in bed with a woman; according to the series producer Michael Hirst, Lagertha has had enough of boys. The newcomer Astrid, played by Josefin Asplund, will take over Lagertha's heart after she killed her last groom and lost her first husband to the now-queen Aslaug.
Speaking of the Queen, Aslaug doesn't seem to be having the best of times at the dinner party she throws back at Kattegat. In the beginning of the season, she was betrayed by the man she thought she was falling in love with - Harbard, the Wanderer - and spent years reigning alone after Ragnar took off in his soul-searching. The trailer does give off the impression that Lagertha is fighting against Aslaug, but the two women have more in common than meets the eye - especially when it comes to their relationship with men. Lagertha and her Astrid are seen in one of the promo shots entering the Great Hall in Kattegat, and joining Aslaug's party. So it may just be the Lagertha and Aslaug have bonded over their broken hearts and unrequited love stories, instead of battling one another.
Now, to the most intriguing bit from the promo shots: we get Ragnar and his favorite frenemy Floki side-by-side and sporting some pretty seriously aged beards. Obviously, time has passed. According to Michael Hirst, Ragnar has to regain his friends' trust after so many years spent away, and Floki is one of said friends that Ragnar aims to enlist on his new crusade to Wessex. Hirst also stated that this particular photo comes from a very emotional scene between the two life-long friends, which just makes the wait much harder.
The History Channel still hasn't revealed the exact premiere date for the second half of Vikings Season 4, but let's not forget that this tail-end of the season will pave way for whatever is to come in Season 5 - which will bring, among many new faces, The Tudors' Jonathan Rhys Meyers in a mysterious role. Like the trailer promises, "the world will tremble" when Vikings returns this fall!
