One of the biggest items of controversy that came with the release of Suicide Squad was that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn costume was too exposing. Many felt that it helped view women to be more of a sexualized item rather than a respected individual. That said, I can't say that I disagree with them on those points, but I think there's more to it than that. So I came up with a list of three reasons as to why the costume was appropriate for this version of Harley Quinn.
1. She Is Vexing
Harley Quinn has always been known as a more seductive character in her history of cartoon and comics. In fact, in Suicide Squad Harley Quinn comes straight out and tells the group that she is known to be quite vexing. So what better way to get that concept across than by wearing an outfit that consists of hot pants and a "Daddy's Lil' Monster" shirt? I mean it's simply part of her characters makeup. Although many did want the classic suit for accuracy purposes, this is the costume that fits much better with our onscreen Harley's personality.
2. How The Joker Would Want It
Jared Leto's version of the Joker in Suicide Squad is built a lot more on flash than previous onscreen iterations. The guy actually wears a lot of nice outfits and flashy gold chains. Thus, it would only make sense for Harley to wear something that is just as eye-catching. The girl lives for the Joker so why wouldn't she want to impress him? This means that the costume also works well with the personality of Leto's Joker as well. If you have seen the movie you would have noticed that there is a flashback scene where Harley is dancing with the Joker while wearing her classic Jester outfit. That said, this scene was merely a fan pleaser and nothing more as that outfit has no place with our onscreen couple.
3. Margot Robbie Worked For It
Coming into the film Margot Robbie knew what type of character she was going to play. Despite not fully wanting to wear hot pants she still agreed to play her knowing that they were just part of the character's makeup. Robbie also ramped up her workout game in order to prepare for the role and be in type physical shape. You can't be a mixed martial arts, butt-kicking Harley Quinn without getting in tip-top physical shape. It's just a part of the deal.
The fact of the matter is that we got the Harley Quinn costume that this iteration needed. I understand that it may not be the most flattering to some people, but it does the character the most justice. Also, for those still not over the fact that they didn't use the Jester suit just keep your hopes high. I mean, who knows? They might try and bring it back, but only time will tell.
