In addition to being the record-breaking, chart-topping Pop Princess, Taylor Swift is also the reigning queen of charitable donations.
Amidst the controversy with Kimye and her budding relationship with Marvel actor Tom Hiddleston, Taylor Swift proves she has style after donating an impressive $1 million to Louisiana in the wake of catastrophic floods.
An unprecedented flood ravaged the state of Louisiana late last week, leaving at least 11 dead and forcing thousands of families to evacuate their homes. Since August 12, over 60,000 residents have registered for aid from FEMA, according to the office of Louisiana state Governor John Bel Edwards.
Taylor Swift took action and encouraged others to do the same after releasing a statement to the Associated Press yesterday. In her statement, Swift committed herself to aiding the people of Louisiana by donating $1 million towards relief efforts.
"We began The 1989 World Tour in Louisiana, and the wonderful fans there made us feel completely at home. The fact that so many people in Louisiana have been forced out of their own homes this week is heartbreaking.
"I encourage those who can to help out and send your love and prayers their way during this devastating time."
This altruistic gesture is admirable, and it's not far from the norm from Taylor Swift. No matter your thoughts on Tay Tay, it's impossible to deny that she does a lot of good in the world. In fact, Swift has been ranked by Huffington Post and Dosomething.org as the world's most charitable celebrity four years in a row.
From Elton John AIDS Foundation to New York City Public School system, from Feeding America to Habitat for Humanity, her list of philanthropic efforts is extensive.
Let's take a look at some of Taylor Swift's largest charitable donations:
1. She Donated $100,000 To Cancer Research This Year
Taylor Swift wants cancer gone. In 2011, she wrote the heartbreaking song 'Ronan,' inspired by a 4-year-old boy who passed away from neuroblastoma. After reading the family's blog documenting Ronan's journey, Swift composed the song and donated all proceeds of the single to pediatric cancer research.
Last year, the 'Wildest Dreams' singer came forward and announced that her mother had been recently diagnosed with cancer. This year, she pledged $100,000 to The V Foundation for Cancer Research during the 11th Annual Dick Vitale Gala.
2. She Donated $50,000 To A Fan's GoFundMe Campaign
In 2015, Swift made headlines after donating $50,000 to 11-year-old fan Naomi Oakes's GoFundMe campaign, which was helping raise funds for her leukemia treatment. Naomi, a massive Taylor Swift fan, first got the attention of the singer-songwriter after posting a video announcing 'Bad Blood' as her personal fight song and that she would be unable to attend Swift's concert as planned due to her intensive treatment schedule.
Swift not only donated the sizable amount to Naomi's treatment fund, but also included a personal message to her young fan:
“To the beautiful and brave Naomi, I’m sorry you have to miss it, but there will always be more concerts. Let’s focus on getting you feeling better. I’m sending the biggest hugs to you and your family.”
3. She Gave $50,000 Proceeds From Her Single To NYC Schools
Swift has been a longtime resident of New York City. Last year the pop sensation decided to pay it forward to the city that stole her heart and made her the official Global Welcome Ambassador. After the release of her album 1989, she announced that all the proceeds from her single 'Welcome to New York' would be donated to NYC public schools.
In the end, the proceeds from the single totaled around $50,000, all of which went to the school system as was confirmed by Capital New York. When Taylor Swift becomes your Ambassador, she takes the job pretty seriously.
4. She Donated $50,00 To A Symphony After Being Inspired By A Song
Last December, Swift made a donation to something near and dear to her heart: the arts. After being inspired by 'Become Ocean' by John Luther Adams, she donated $50,000 to the Seattle Symphony, which commissioned the orchestral composition.
Her donations went on to benefit two noble causes, Link Up, "a music-education program for elementary-school students," and the musicians' pension fund.
5. She Donated $50,000 To Her Backup Dancer's Nephew
On a slightly more personal note for the singer, TSwift surprised one of her backup dancers, Kim "Toshi" Davidson, by donating $50,000 to his 13-month-old nephew Ayden, who had been recently diagnosed with cancer.
After posting the picture to Instagram with a caption explaining the situation, he boarded a flight. It wasn't until he landed that he learned of Taylor's massive contribution and message of hope for young Ayden.
Though these may be some of her more sizable donations — and I've only included ones that took place recently — Taylor Swift is famous for giving gifts big and small to her fans.
Whether she's simply presenting a fan with tickets to one of her shows, sending personalized Christmas presents, mailing a fan a check for $1,989 to help pay down her student loans, or writing a $250,000 check to Ke$ha following the singer's legal woes, Taylor truly is the Swift that keeps on giving — and a shoe in for the most charitable celebrity title a fifth year running.
