While we anxiously wait to see if Neve Campbell will grace us with her presence in the long-awaited Scream 5, here's a little treat for Scream fans. Two decades have done nothing to diminish the shine of the finest slasher horror of the '90s, and the late Wes Craven's legacy remains a treasured part of of horror movie history.

To fans who have watched and rewatched Scream countless times, the cast are as familiar as any beloved childhood hero... or villain. So let's get appropriately psyched for Scream 5, but never forget where the franchise came from, and who made it possible.

Neve Campbell

  • Born: October 3, 1973
  • Character: Sidney Prescott
  • Killer Quote:
''They're all the same. Some stupid killer stalking some big-breasted girl who can't act who is always running up the stairs when she should be running out the front door. It's insulting.''

Neve Campbell was initially reluctant to join the Scream cast so soon after her previous horror movie, The Craft, but eventually relented to gain her first lead movie role. She also adored the character of Sidney Prescott, telling Fangoria, ''She's a fantastic character for any kind of movie.''

Rose McGowan

  • Born: September 5, 1973
  • Character: Tatum Riley
  • Killer Quote:
''BAM! Bitch went down.''

Rose McGowan broke away from the cult she was raised in to become an outspoken advocate for human rights — and a damn fine actor! Speaking of her narrow escape from the depraved Children of God cult she grew up in, McGowan told Howard Stern: "As strong as I like to think I've always been, I'm sure I could have been broken. I know I got out by the skin of my teeth."

Courteney Cox

  • Born: June 15, 1964
  • Character: Gale Weathers
  • Killer Quote:
''You know, in a demographic study, I proved to be most popular amongst males 11 to 24.''

Courteney Cox's career was in its initial Friends boom when Scream was filmed, so snagging her for the cast was a real boon for director Wes Craven. Her first screen appearance was in 1984, in the famous 'Dancing in the Dark' video for Bruce Springsteen. She grew up in Birmingham, Alabama (so where's the accent, Courteney?).

Drew Barrymore

  • Born: February 22, 1975
  • Character: Casey Becker
  • Killer Quote:
''I lied. I do have a boyfriend and he’ll be here any second so your ass better be gone. I swear. He's big and he plays football and he'll kick the shit out of you!"

Craven was surprised when mega-star Drew Barrymore agreed to appear in Scream, and killing off such a big star in the first scene set the tone for the movie. After battling drug and alcohol addiction from a very young age, Barrymore overcame the trappings of her childhood stardom to become an inspirational figure, not to mention possibly the greatest horror movie opening scene ever!

David Arquette

  • Born: September 8, 1971
  • Character: Dewey Riley
  • Killer Quote:
''Cause of my boyish good looks, muscle mass has increased my acceptance as a serious police officer.''

Like co-star Rose McGowan, Arquette also had an unusual upbringing. He was raised in a spiritual Subud commune in Bentonville, Virginia, with a father who struggled with substance abuse. David showed talent from an early age, and aficionados of '90s cinema may remember one of his very first movie roles: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992).

Matthew Lillard

  • Born: January 24, 1970
  • Character: Stu Macher
  • Killer Quote:
''Let's face it Sidney, your mother was no Sharon Stone''

Lillard began his screen career early, presenting Nickelodeon show SK8-TV in 1990 with the screen name Matthew Lyn. He and Neve Campbell dated for a time after meeting on the Scream set. He trained in acting at the Pasadena American Academy of Dramatic Arts at the same time as Ant-Man star Paul Rudd.

Jamie Kennedy

  • Born: May 25, 1970
  • Character: Randy Meeks
  • Killer Quote:
''If you were the only suspect in a senseless bloodbath - would you be standing in the horror section?''

The internet has failed on this one: there are no übercute baby photos of Jamie Kennedy to be found. However, his back story is an interesting one. Determined to be an actor — and after unsuccessfully auditioning for more than 80 commercials — he invented a fake agent called 'Marty Power' to sell himself. It worked!

Skeet Ulrich

  • Born: January 20, 1970
  • Character: Billy Loomis
  • Killer Quote:
''Did we ever find out why Hannibal Lecter like to eat people? DON'T THINK SO!''

Raised in Concord, North Carolina, Bryan Ray Trout earned the nickname 'Skeet' from his little league coach because he was so small. After surviving open heart surgery at the age of ten, Ulrich studied at NYU. He performed as an uncredited extra before landing his bigger roles in The Craft and Scream — if you look closely, he appears in the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
