The Mechanic 2: Resurrection will be the last throw of the dice for the summer movie, coming after an extremely bloated schedule that has led many films to flop and/or be critically panned. Starring the always-game Jason Statham opposite sex symbol Jessica Alba, it promises to be a slice of escapist b-movie fun after overhyped tentpole franchises and unsuccessful reboots. The 2011 entry making a tidy enough profit to justify another entry, the sequel sees Arthur Bishop once again employed to kill people whilst making it look like an accident.
Watch The Trailer Below:
Premiering this very evening, we shall see if it has the critical potential to be a box-office smash, but before then lets have a look at some of the things we could expect from the upcoming film.
1. Over The Top Action
The opening sequence of the trailer showing Statham climbing up the side of a skyscraper before creating a hole in an outdoor swimming pool, and a later scene showing Statham jumping off a giant gondola (going where?), The Mechanic 2 looks like it is going to be a no-holds-barred, gleefully stupid action film. Yet, as the big tentpole franchises have seen heroes constantly battling worldwide destruction, culminating in large messes of CGI, Resurrection with its relatively smaller scale, looks to be a breath of fresh air.
2. Another Classic Statham Romance
Statham is an interesting leading man when it comes to romance, so much as I haven't really seen him flirt in any movie, yet equally in the world of Statham no flirting is actually needed. When you are that alpha, you don't even have to try. Starring as his love interest - yet thankfully adept with a weapon herself - is Jessica Alba. Hopefully this love interest will ground the story in something real upon which to hang all manner of ridiculous action scenes.

3. Deadpan Statham
In American Statham action films, there are two types of Statham: Statham as a cockney expat, or Statham with a really terrible American accent. Thankfully in The Mechanic: Resurrection Statham is using his normal voice, which suits him much better for his trademark deadpan humour. By being the only geezer in a world full of Russian gangsters, American bureaucrats and French cops allows Statham to really shine as a uniquely humorous presence in action cinema.
4. Buddy Comedy
In Resurrection Statham is coupled with Tommy Lee Jones, making one of those pairings you never realised you wanted until you saw the casting announced. With appearances in Mechanic and Jason Bourne this summer, is Tommy Lee Jones secretly the break-out star of Summer 2016? Channeling once again his greatest role as Chief Deputy Marshal Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive, we hope to see Jones giving absolutely no fucks whilst teaming up with Statham to try and save the day.
5. Exotic Locations
Whether its chasing down the Fast gang in Dubai, or running away from the cops by the French Rivera, Statham movies are characterised by their luscious use of scenery upon which to mount the action. Filmed in widescreen, and boasting locations such as Sydney, Thailand and Brazil, the film promises to be as aesthetically pleasing as it will be gruesome.
