Note: John Manganiello has being officially cast as Deathstroke, albeit check out the fan picks below!
The ever-expanding DC Extended Universe just gave us Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman is right around the corner. With a cinematic version of Captain Boomerang and even Slipknot already in theaters, is it time for Geoff Johns and the fellows at Warner Bros. to give us the Deathstroke movie we’ve all been waiting for? Of course! But even more exciting, who should take on the role of the deadliest assassin in the DCEU?
Movie Pilot recently asked fan opinions about the best actor to play Deathstroke on the big screen . Some of my favorite answers, along with a couple of my own picks, are below.
1. Frank Grillo
One of the top picks by fans is the man who played Marvel’s Crossbones, Frank Grillo. Coming out of the recent The Purge: Election Year, Grillo definitely has the look and feel that has made Slade Wilson and his alter-ego Deathstroke comic book icons. Fans Brad Jutte and Lex Guzman totally agree:
2. Ron Perlman
Another top fan pick is Hellboy himself. Ron Perlman has voiced many DC characters, in shows like Justice League Unlimited and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. He even voiced Deathstroke in the Teen Titans series. Perlman may be 66 years old but fan Cyril Tabigue wants Perlman to step in the shoes of Slade Wilson once again, this time in a live-action movie, and Brad Jutte holds Perlman as a standard, too:
3. Manu Bennett
You can’t deny that Manu Bennett was among the best, if not the best, parts of Arrow Season 2. It’s no wonder then, why fans want him to pick up the sword once more and bring the Deathstroke character to life on the big screen. Having Bennett as Deathstroke would not only be amazing, but it would also solidify the connection of DC’s television universe with the movie universe. Not convinced? Ask fans Jussi Halttumen, Matthew Maitland, or Achintya Sagar:
4. Jason Statham
Statham is coming to theaters this month with Mechanic: Resurrection, but there are plenty of other movies that perfectly depict how awesome he could be as Deathstroke. Take, for example, his character in Furious 7, or his character from Blitz or the Transporter franchise: all total badasses, especially since he does many of his characters' stunts. Fans Morgan Cunningham and Wesley Roberts agree:
Hopefully he is up for the role, since rumor has it Statham turned down the role of Bullseye in Netflix’s hit streaming series Daredevil.
5. Matt Damon
While many fans would like Matt Damon to take on the role of Batman villain Hush, we can’t deny that Damon could be a perfect Deathstroke. The Jason Bourne movies are a perfect example of what Damon could bring to the character of Slade Wilson/Deathstroke, as Anthony Perkinton suggests:
6. Hugh Jackman
The former Wolverine as Deathstroke? DC, take my money please! As heartbreaking as it'll be to see Jackman put down the adamantium claws after Wolverine 3, seeing him come into the DC landscape would be more than fantastic. I would still love to see Jackman in the Marvel Universe, but it’s just so difficult to picture him in a role that is not the iconic Wolverine. So, DC, you know what to do!
7. Toby Kebbell
Recently starring in Warcraft and Ben Hur, Kebbell has had a troubled run of films following from the unsuccessful Fantastic Four reboot, but he'd already proven his bad-guy chops in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. His Fantastic Four cast member Michael B. Jordan has gone to become a top villain in the MCU, so Kebbell should follow his footsteps and take on the role of Deathstroke in the DCEU!
