The sixth season of Shameless only ended in April but the seventh is fast approaching and I, for one, couldn't be more excited about getting my weekly dose of the Gallaghers much earlier than usual. With little over a month to go until the season premiere, Showtime has started rolling out the promos for Shameless, including the first trailer for Season 7. Check out it here.
It feels as if we never left the South Side of Chicago, right? As we enter into a new era for the family, there are sure to be many changes for the characters following that revelatory sixth season finale. As well as the trailer, the cast were recently spotted in Chicago filming the outdoor scenes for the new season and some fans even took this opportunity to meet their favorite stars of the show. That's not all — Showtime have also unveiled the first official poster for Season 7 and it highlights how the show is as defiant as ever.
Although a lot of the cast are notably absent from this poster, it mirrors previous season posters and we can see that Shameless is going to be as bold as it ever was. With only a month to go until the seventh season premieres, let's take a look at what to expect from Season 7.
A Return To Shameless' Roots
One thing that stood out for me about this new trailer is that Shameless appears to be returning to its roots. Ever since the Gallagher clan grew up, it's been difficult to maintain that familial feel of the show and Season 6 was criticized by some for being too different from previous seasons. However, we can see in this new trailer that the Gallagher's will be reunited once more and living under the same roof as they struggle to make ends meet for another year. Also, Frank plots to get back into the house and the family must join forces in order to stop this from happening.
Although many shows are criticized for repeating storylines, Shameless is different — the show is at its best when the Gallaghers are together and fighting to make ends meet. Moreover, the ongoing feud with Frank provides more than enough comedy. It's great to see that the seventh season will be returning us to the Shameless that we fell in love with.
A New Direction For Fiona
Fiona Gallagher's had a rough ride when it comes to her romantic relationships on Shameless. It's understandable really, considering she practically gave up her life to take care of her siblings. This season will more than likely find Fiona at a crossroads — after the Season 6 finale saw her and Sean go their separate ways, Fiona will not only rediscover herself as a single woman, but she will likely have to get a new job.
Moreover, Fiona says in the trailer that it's time to look after herself and — let's be honest — she deserves it. Hopefully she can find some time to heal her wounds before stepping back into the dating pool. In terms of her former relationships, no one has seemed right except for maybe Jimmy/Steve. I know he constantly lied to her, but I'd love to see him return — he was a perfect match for her and understood her responsibilities and even helped her out. They made a great team. Either way, Season 7 will be a new chapter for Fiona Gallagher.
Trouble For Ian and Caleb
Ian may find his relationship with Caleb to be not as concrete as he once thought. On paper Caleb seems like a nice guy, but on screen it's just not working — he doesn't really fit with Ian and he comes across as a little condescending at times. New reports suggest that Ian will find out that Caleb has been cheating on him and this is the last thing Ian needs to be dealing with right now.
It'll be interesting to see how Ian copes and whether or not this will affect his bipolar disorder. I find Ian to be easily the most interesting character on Shameless and I felt that he was almost neglected in the sixth season, so I'm hoping that he'll be featured a lot more in the seventh because Cameron Monaghan does a wonderful job in the role.

It would be nice for Ian to find love and, let's be honest, there is only one person who can set his heart alight and that is Mickey Milkovich. It's a well documented fact that fans were displeased at the lack of Mickey in Season 6, so it'll be interesting to see if Mickey will make any appearance this season. One thing is for sure — Ian and Mickey, or "Gallavich" as the fans call them, were the greatest and most loving relationship that Shameless has ever seen and it would be such a travesty if the two do not re-unite in the future. Mickey's absence was definitely a huge factor that made the sixth season less like the Shameless we fell in love with.
Lip Gets The Help He Needs
Lip's downfall started when he dated his tutor Helene, but the relationship soon turned toxic and the smartest Gallagher found himself throwing his life away and getting drunk. Judging from the trailer, Lip didn't follow through with his rehab plan from Season 6 and as Veronica so aptly puts it — Lip is at risk of turning into his father.
It would be a shame for this to continue much longer as Lip is living proof that you don't have to let your surroundings define you and that you can better yourself. I hope he doesn't throw all that away as it would insinuate that you can't break free from your past. Lip is extremely bright and he has a great future ahead of him, but if he doesn't quit drinking to this level soon, then he may not have said future to look forward to.
Frank Continues To Be Frank
Although he can be annoyingly repetitive, Shameless wouldn't be the same without Frank and his deplorable antics. However much we despise him for what he does to his family, we end up loving him because he's just so darn funny. William H. Macy was recently nominated for an Emmy Award for Lead Actor in a Comedy and it's easy to see why because the way he plays Frank is magnificent.
Franks antics as of late have been more separate from his family but after the Gallagher's tossed him into the Chicago lake, I think it's safe to say that he's plotting revenge.
I cannot put into words how delighted I am that Isidora Goreshter has (finally) been made a series regular on Shameless. Goreshter is fantastic as Svetlana and her unusual relationship with Kev and Veronica was one of the more delightful parts of the sixth season. But my admiration for the character extends further back than that, as Svetlana transformed from Mickey's wife that we loved to hate into one of the top three characters on the show. The one-liners and constant use of phrases like "orange boy" and "strange looking bald man" are brilliant characteristics. I hope we get to see more of her relationship with Ian this season — those two were brilliant together and Ian had a great relationship with Svetlana's son Yevgeny.
The decision to make Svetlana work in Kev's bar was one of the best the writers ever made as it meant that we got to see her more and more. There's very little I can say here except: It's about time. Goreshter is the funniest lady on TV and it's a delight watching her — she steals every scene that she is in. She deserves all the awards going for her performance as Svetlana.
It's hard to believe that Shameless is seven seasons in as it still feels as fresh as the day it premiered. Never once have I felt like the show no longer needs to be on the air and it constantly adapts and continues to be relevant. The new trailer has made me extremely excited for the upcoming season and two doses of the Gallagher family in one year is much appreciated. It looks like it's going to be another year of manic mischief and mayhem.
My only wish is that we see Mickey, Mandy and Sheila again at some point as their presence on the show is sorely missed. Other than that, I think we're in for one hell of a season. Chin up, South Siders — Shameless is coming back real soon and it looks like it's going to be as strong as ever.
