Mariah Carey's older sister Alison has been arrested on prostitution charges after police discovered a Craigslist advert using the lyrics to Mariah's smash hit 'Fantasy' as a means to advertise sexual services.
The 55-year-old was arrested by the Saugerties police department after an undercover investigator verified that she was prostituting herself from a hotel in the town. She initially appeared on the authorities radar after adverts on the "adult" section of a classified website were found that read:
"Im a pretty lady looking for guys who are looking to have some fun and get into a world of pleasure that other woman just cant provide two you, woman with the ability to make the earth move for you and to get you to see stars, oh yea with me its,ITS SUCH A SWEET,SWEET FANTASY BABY, WHEN I CLOSE MY EYES I COME AND TAKE YOU ON AND ON."
Any Mariah fan worth their salt will know that the all-caps final line has been plucked directly from 1995's 'Fantasy,' one of the pop diva's biggest ever hits.
Police have warned anyone who had unprotected sexual contact with Alison Carey to seek medical attention due to the sex worker's HIV positive status. Carey will appear in Saugerties Town Court on Tuesday, August 30 to face charges.
It's pretty tragic that the sibling of a woman who once regularly made the Forbes rich list is reduced to turning tricks on the street, but just how did Mariah and Alison become estranged? Below is a history of the pair's turbulent relationship and how fame tore them apart.
Born to Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Hickey, Carey's life was shaped by racism over her mother's choice of partner from the moment she was born. Alfred was of African American and Afro-Venezuelan descent, while her mother, Patricia, has Irish roots. Patricia's entire family were so appalled that she had married a black man that they disowned her entirely, along with her future children.
Alison was the first born child followed by brother, Morgan, and finally, the youngest child Mariah. The family lived together until Mariah was three years old when her parents divorced. Alison moved out with her father, but Morgan and Mariah stayed with their mom.
Although Maria eventually totally lost touch with her father, family photos show that she remained a part of her sister's life until their teenage years.
According to Alison, who was a high school drop out and mother by the age of 16, she helped Mariah out as much as she could before her 'lil sis found fame. In 2012 she told The Sun that:
"When Mariah did not have food, it was me who came and filled up her fridge. When she did not have clean clothes, I would pay for her laundry. Mariah and our mother were so broke once they got kicked out of their apartment. I paid for a new place. I also rented the vintage Rolls-Royce that took Mariah to her first audition aged 16 or 17."

Initial Fall Out
It is unclear exactly which year Mariah and Alison severed ties, but according to Dlisted, Mariah snipped all contact with her troubled older sis' when she attempted to sell a tell-all story to the National Enquirer in the mid '90s. This came after an explosive argument between the siblings at Mariah's 1993 wedding.
By this point, it is understood that Alison was already struggling with drug addiction and finding it increasingly difficult to care for her children.
A Lonely Descent
Alison's troubles began a long time ago, and sadly, they haven't shown much sign of improvement since her first arrest for prostitution more than a decade ago. Back then, the New York Post reported that Alison Carey solicited an undercover officer to pay for sex on a boat at West Shore Marina.
By this point, Alison's addiction issues were so great that most of her family had turned their back on her, but Mariah Carey's rep insists she was still financially supportive at this time:
"Through the years, Mariah has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars supporting Alison and her children. In fact, Mariah has supported her extended family for over two decades."
The bitterness within the family probably wasn't helped by the fact that Alison inherited $1.6 million from her father, Alfred Carey, when he died in 2002. After setting up trust funds for her children, she went on to blow the rest of the fortune on drugs.
Brother Morgan Lashes Out
Earlier this year, Mariah's brother, Morgan, lashed out at the pop star calling her an "evil witch" for refusing to step up to the plate and help her sister pay for her devastatingly expensive hospital bills.
According to Morgan, Alison was seriously injured in an alleged house invasion attack last year on top of being HIV positive and having scarring on her brain. He believes that Mariah has the resources to help Alison financially by paying hospital bills to ensure she cannot spend the money feeding her addiction:
"The worst is yet to come and Mariah has it in her power to at least ensure a soft landing and avoid a life time of regret about missing this opportunity to forgive and help her only sister.I would be hopeful, although I am not encouraged by the past, that Mariah would step up because she’s in a position to step up.We’re talking about small change to these people, her fiancé is a billionaire. The least they could do is put Alison in a good hospital and make sure she gets the care she needs. Mariah is the one person in the family who could actually make a real meaningful difference to Alison’s life."
Mariah's reps responded to the allegations that she was refusing to pay for her sister's medical treatment with a statement that claimed the pop diva is still giving money to her estranged big sis' from afar.
History Repeats Itself
Although all was quiet from the Carey family since Morgan publicly expressed his distaste with the way Mariah was dealing with (or, not dealing with) Alison, it seems that the eldest Carey child has made a recovery from the injuries she was suffering from in March.
Sadly, Alison still seems to be in the grips of addiction and financial problems and the circumstances of her second arrest were very similar to those from a decade earlier.
While it's difficult to care for people suffering from addiction issues due to their often self-destructive impulses, we hope that Mariah or a charitable organization can step up to the plate and help Alison recover.
