Ever since it was announced that Supergirl would be joining The Flash, Arrow and Legends Of Tomorrow over on The CW, fans have anticipating the second season of the Melissa Benoist led show more than ever. Amid recent announcements of crossovers, musical episodes and surprise guest stars, a newly released teaser trailer has only heightened the anticipation.
The new teaser doesn't show us anything new, but that's fine, because earlier today the CW released some new images teasing Season 2. The photos reveal a lot about the upcoming season, showing off the titular hero with her older cousin Superman, teasing a possible rivalry between the Man of Steel and the Martian Manhunter and showing off some more fan favorite characters.
Supergirl And Superman Together At Last
We all saw the first look image of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman, but seeing him in action is a completely different thing. Hoechlin looks great in the Superman outfit standing alongside Melissa Benoist's Supergirl. Back during San Diego Comic-Con, Benoist told IGN that her character's relationship with Superman was something that felt "unfinished or unfulfilled" during the first season, commenting that it's an "important relationship." Thankfully, we'll finally get to see the pair team-up during Season 2.
It's still a mystery why Superman appears on the show or the reasons why the Supergirl/Superman team up happens. We do know that some of the season will take place in Metropolis — Superman's city — which will most likely be linked to the Man of Steel's arrival.
I think Hoechlin will make a solid Superman and judging from the images, the team-ups are going to be pretty great. Some photos also reveal that the pair will appear together in their alter-egos as Kara and Clark. We'll even get to see Clark hang out with Jimmy Olsen, bringing the classic comic book friendship to TV with a new twist.
Having spent much of the first season talking about Superman, it'll be interesting to see the dynamic between Olsen and his superhero friend. Mechad Brooks was an usual casting choice for Olsen, deviating from the usual nerdy character seen in the comic books, so I'll look forward to seeing if this Olsen shares the same special friendship with the Man of Steel as his comic book counterpart.
Friction Between Superman And Martian Manhunter?
The thing that stood out the most for me in the photos was the relationship between Martian Manhunter and newcomer Superman. In several of the photos, the pair look like they are in the middle of a disagreement with each other, much to Kara's disdain. We've all been so excited about the prospect of seeing Kara meet her cousin that we never stopped to think about the possible relationship between Superman and Manhunter. Martian Manhunter and Superman have been allies for years in the comic books and subsequent cartoons, both appearing as members of the Justice League, but it looks like a different angle to their relationship will be explored in Supergirl.
The first season of the show dealt with Martian Manhunter's origin story — he is the last of his kind and inhabited the body of Hank Henshaw to protect the Danvers's children — but it'll be interesting to see if Manhunter is aware of Superman or vice versa. Perhaps the two will have met in the past? Considering their comic book camaraderie, I would find it odd it they hadn't encountered each other at some point before.

It'll also be interesting to see the dynamic between the two characters because in Season 1, it was Manhunter who became Kara's guardian and guided her on the right path. By the end of the season, they were crimefighting cohorts. Manhunter is essentially responsible for helping to mold Supergirl into the hero that she has become today — all without the aid of Superman.
Now that Clark Kent is taking up a temporary residence in National City, I wonder if he'll be jealous of Kara's relationship with Manhunter? Moreover, if Manhunter and Superman have never met before, will Superman be accepting of other alien life forms? I'm hoping over the course of the season we'll see the two become friendly and mentor Kara together, but for now it appears there will definitely be some disagreements going on.
Enter Lena Luthor
The arrival of Lena Luthor on Supergirl marks the first appearance of the Luthor name and family on the show. These new photos reveal Kara and Clark having an audience with Lena, but we still don't know why. Recent set photos revealed that some of Supergirl will take place in Metropolis and that Luthor Corp will be involved, which provides a perfect opening for Lena's inclusion. The character has had a varied history in the comics but she's never been particularly villainous — whether or not this will translate to screen has yet to be seen.
We know that Lena arrives in National City following Lex's incarceration, so she might take control of the family company in her brother's absence. It's also possible that Lena will become Kara's new boss. CatCo Worldwide Media will likely need another boss due to actress Calista Flockhart's recurring status on the second season so it is very possible that Lena will be the lady for the job.
Cat Grant Is Back!
I think I speak for everybody for when I say that one of the greatest things about Supergirl's first season was Ally McBeal star Calista Flockhart. Playing the classic Cat Grant, Flockhart provided humor for the show and an emotional anchor for Kara. When it was announced that Supergirl was moving to The CW, my first thought was whether or not Flockhart would still be able to remain with the show. It was confirmed that Flockhart would return for the second season but it would be in a recurring capacity. Series creator Greg Berlanti told IndieWire that she'll appear in a minimum of 6 episodes — including the first 2 episodes of the season.
These photos show Cat in her office, suggesting that she will be remaining in National City for the beginning of the season. It's likely that she will have to be written out at a later date. The Supergirl Season 2 synopsis suggested that Kara will have to deal with a new boss, so Cat will likely leave and return intermittently. That'll probably be a challenge for Kara, considering Cat often gave her advice that pointed her heroic actions in the right direction. The loss of Flockhart as a regular will mean the loss of Kara's female inspiration. Although we'll have the legendary Lynda Carter appearing as the President of the United States, I hope we see Flockhart back more often — she's the heart of the show.
The new photos and teaser trailer are sure to add to the anticipation as we approach the season premiere of Supergirl. We've had many announcements about Season 2, but the photos are the first actual glimpses of the CW series. With all the bickering between Martian Manhunter and Superman as well as the arrival of Lena Luthor, it seems that Supergirl's new season will be more explosive than the last.
Supergirl Season 2 premieres on the CW on October 10. Are you excited for the upcoming second season of Supergirl? Tell me in the comment section below.
