It happening, it's happening! Everyone stay calm! Teen Wolf launched its final season with "Memory Lost" giving Teen Wolf fans a perhaps the most bittersweet moment since the series began. Hopes and dreams for Stiles and Lydia came to a devastating halt only a moment after they came to fruition. The Season 6 premiere began hopeful as the pack began their senior year, but quickly turned sour when Scott and Stiles are called to assist in an investigation into an abandoned child and his parent's mysterious disappearance. This turns out to be Stiles' demise as he is the only one of the pack to witness exactly what is behind the mysterious disappearance of the parents, and soon to be his — The Wild Huntsman.
In a tearful moment, Stiles begs Lydia to remember him. Reminding her she's the first girl he ever danced with and to "remember I love you" just before he is erased from time and supposedly Lydia's memory. But is Stiles gone for good? Can Stiles and Lydia have a happily ever after when Season 6 comes to a close?
The Wild Hunt
The Wild Hunt myth centers around a supernatural group of men either from the underworld or Faerie world who come during a storm on black horses and take the souls of those who see them. They are described as huntsmen and the myth goes that seeing them means a great disaster is approaching in the area in which they were spotted. It can also mean the death of the person who witnesses them.
While Stiles has been erased from reality, we know he is not dead because Lydia could still feel the presence of the child's parents after they were taken by the ghost riders. Had they been dead, she would have known it. Also in most of the mythology behind the wild hunt the riders don't kill but instead take whomever they capture to ride along with them or live in the underworld or faerie-land from where the riders come. So wherever Stiles is, he's not gone for good.
Another point is we don't yet know why the parents of the child were targeted or what the deciding factor is in who can and can't see the riders. Learning these things may be the answer on how to retrieve the stolen souls before it's too late-but it's not the only one.Getting Stiles back may depend on something much simpler: Lydia. The only person who can even remember she was supposed to remember something: Stiles.
Why Lydia Is Stiles Only Chance
Six seasons in the making the writers of Teen Wolf finally saw fit to give Stydia fans across the world the moment they have pined over for so long, an "I love you." As soon as Stiles spoke the words he was ripped from Lydia's grasp and memory by the ghost riders coming to collect his soul and existence. As Lydia walks back into school the night following Stiles last words, she remembers she is supposed to remember something, but can't put a finger on it. This, however, is huge. Lydia remembered him the longest as she was with Stiles until the very last moment he existed. Everyone around Stiles had already forgotten who was even as they stood face to face with him.
As a banshee-, Lydia's brain is capable of more than most, but Teen Wolf EP Jeff Davis assures fans its not her capabilities that are keeping Stiles memory in her mind-but the pair's "special relationship." Davis spoke to TV Line saying:
“They have a very special relationship. They’ve saved each other’s lives several times. We’ve explored Scott’s great friendship with Stiles, and we wanted to go through a different perspective this time.”
I don't know about you but this sounds like Lydia is the key to Stiles survival. How? My theory is that memory is the answer to bringing back the forgotten souls taken by the ghost riders. If no one remembers you then you don't exist. It's how the ghost riders have the security of riding in the night to steal souls; no one who has ever seen them exists in reality. When the boy saw the riders take his parents, the riders then came for the boy. Only by this time Stiles had seen them too, and so their third victim was named.
In the car with Lydia trying to escape the huntsmen, Stiles knew trying to outrun them would only endanger her to be erased as well. So he gave himself up but not before marking Lydia's soul in his own way — with love. A mark that Stiles somehow knew could beat the one left on his soul by the huntsman.
In telling Lydia he loved her and it being true, he ensured that nothing the huntsmen could do would erase him from her completely. She was marked. It will be up to Lydia to remember him and make him exist once more, something he trusted the bond they share and her to do when he finally had the courage to tell her how he loved her.
The teaser for Teen Wolf Season 6 Episode 2 ,"Superposition," highlights Lydia and Scott desperately trying to remember what has been taken from them. It also shows that Mason is next on the ghost riders list. The title of the episode offers clues as well. Superposition basically describes two waves riding on the same medium but in opposite directions that don't disturb each other. Instead they just overlap and carry on.
This only supports the idea that where Stiles is is another world just like our own, but in a different dimension. In an "underworld" of sorts like in the Wild Hunt Mythology. Perhaps Episode 2 will shine some light as to just how the two dimensions overlap and if there is a loophole somewhere that could free the lost souls-maybe it's how the huntsmen go back and forth in between both realities.
"Superposition" airs on MTV Tuesday November 22 at 9pm ET.
