In the history of AMC's zombie apocalypse we've seen an awful lot of terrible ideas, but Carl attempting to barge into Negan's compound may just be the worst yet. However, Carl's idiocy may have shown Negan that he's malleable enough to keep around.
Negan hasn't smashed his face in yet, and has maybe reasoned along the lines of "if this kid's dumb enough to try to take me on, maybe he's dumb enough to join me."
Hey kid, look at how much fun we have around my compound!

Negan might be so puerile as to be sexually obsessed with a baseball bat, but Carl actor Chandler Riggs thinks that "Carl is really not sure where to go." Riggs told AMC's #TheWalkingDead talk show The Talking Dead that Carl and Negan's relationship could deepen:
"I think the whole reason behind Negan bringing Carl to the Sanctuary is to build more respect from Carl towards Negan. I think it works for the most part.
Negan treats Carl like an adult, which is kind of cool because you see Rick and Michonne treating Carl like a kid. Carl is really not sure where to go."
Negan capitalizes on Carl's immaturity: Rick protects him from some of the grossest evils of the world, whereas Negan happily talks about rape and torture in front of him. Look at how much fun being an adult is!
Could Negan not "treating Carl like a kid" entice Carl to switch sides?
