Veteran actor Peter Vaughan, who played the Night Watch's wise Maester Aemon with grace and dignity, has passed away aged 93. The star's agent Sally Long-Innes released a statement:

"This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him."

Vaughan's career spanned several decades on hit shows such as Chancer, Citizen Smith and Porridge before making the role of Maester Aemon his own. Only an actor of Vaughan's caliber could have made this scene between Aemon and Jon Snow so spine-chillingly brilliant:
