Doctor Who fans' excitement for the arrival of the Thirteenth Doctor, played by actress Jodie Whittaker, is growing. This is especially true with the recent release of the Doctor's new costume, as released by BBC:

While Whittaker's Doctor is clearly meant to move the series into the future, fans quickly noticed that the outfit contained a number of nods to the character's past. Let's take a look at four of the most obvious references.

4. A Familiar Set Of Stripes

The first similarity fans noticed was the stripes adorning the Doctor's new shirt, as well as the seams of her jacket. While they are more similar in size, the stripes use a similar color scheme as the iconic scarf worn by the Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker. These same colors were used on K-9's collar to solidify his connection with the Fourth Doctor. Some Whovians also noted that the stripes look like an inverted version of a striped top that companion Bill Potts wore in a few Series 10 episodes:

With these things in mind, the Doctor's striped top could act both as a nod to her own past, and as a reminder of her former companion.

3. Brace Yourself

The Thirteenth Doctor also noticeably sports a pair of mustard-colored suspenders (or "braces" in British English), holding up a pair of blue trousers that sit high on her waist. Suspenders have been included as a part of the Doctor's outfit before, most recently as a part of the Eleventh Doctor's original tweed jacket and bow-tie ensemble. During the classic era, the Second Doctor is also seen wearing a pair.

Meanwhile, the trousers that the braces hold up are reminiscent of something the First or Second Doctors would have worn, while their color appears to match the Tardis.

2. Not All The Colours Of The Rainbow

At first glance, it would appear that aside from the colorful seams, the Thirteenth Doctor's jacket has nothing in common with the garish, multi-colored monster worn by Sixth Doctor Colin Baker. Look a little closer, however, and you will see that, while different in color, the two jackets share a similar, loose fitting style. Both Jackets, along with the one usually worn by the Eighth Doctor, are also noticeably longer than those worn by the other Doctors.

The Thirteen's is longest of all, with the jacket just about reaching her ankles.

1. Raiding The Wife's Wardrobe

As for footwear, the Thirteenth Doctor dons a pair of lace-up boots, and these, too, connect to the Doctor's past. While she is best known for the sparkling red heels worn in her second appearance, boots often completed the outfits of the Doctor's wife, River Song. The boots varied in style, depending on how active River had to be in a particular episode. It wouldn't be surprising if the show includes a joke about raiding River's wardrobe when the Doctor realizes she has regenerated into a woman.

The Thirteenth Doctor will first be seen when the Twelfth Doctor regenerates in this year's Doctor Who Christmas special, "Twice Upon A Time." However, we will most likely have to wait until Season 11 premieres in 2018 to see the onscreen debut of her outfit.
